    She was employed at the Lincoln County Lunatic Asylum in Lincolnshire, but what kind of servant was she?

    So... would she be a servant for the female inmates or do you think they are just clarifying her sex? I still think it looks like something else as there is a . and what looks like a large A

    The only thing I can see that might resemble a large A is the letter S in servant.

    Sorry, can't make it into anything other than "female servant" no matter how hard I try. :oops:

    Are other servants in the same place marked "male" or "female"? Not that it would help with working out whether they nursed inmates of that sex or if it referred to themselves alone.

    It is denoting her sex. Back along, just initials could be used (F.S. or M.S. for female servant and male servant respectively.)
    The . that you can see is the end of the letter a in Female and the A that you see is the le at the end of the word.. :)
