My sister wants to commemorate my grandfather with a tattoo of his service number and an anchor. How do we find out this? We don't want or need the whole service record, and I don't think she would be willing to pay a fee for it anyway (certainly not if it is £30 like the Army records when I enquired about my other grandfather).

He was born in 1929, and so served post-WW2, married in 1948, and didn't stay in the service long after this.

My uncle has been going through various stashes of paperwork in the house but doesn't seem to have found anything Navy related.

Well, the page which gives you information about how to get service records is to be found at
    http://www.royalnavyresearcharchive.org.uk/Records_page.htm
and you were correct to assume they would charge £30
If you look at section 3 "Service Records for Deceased Royal Navy and Royal Marine Personnel who died after 1924" they do say you can contact them with requests for more information. I would be cheeky and ask them if you could just have his service number.........:reading:

Do you have a copy of this marriage certificate? My grandfather's service number is on his as he was in the Forces when he married.

    Just a thought.... ;)

If not, a copy certificate might be the answer. I do hope that it has the number on it!
