Just found this application for admittance to the Freedom of the City. The Father George is listed on son's baptism as Shipwright but this is Leather 'Filler'? Did he fill in frames on shipbuilders work or similar? Can anyone enlighten me please?

Darned if I can find anything. I was thinking a leather repairer, filling in cracks and holes in leather, restoring damaged ships seating....shrug
    Stuffing leather seats. ?

Plenty to tell you what a tube of it does!! Is it definitely 'filler' do you think? Though I can't think what else it could be!

It talks about the 'Company'. I couldn't find a Company of Leather Fillers, but I found the Company of Leathersellers.

Sounds like a bit of an elitist lodge of some sort, for master craftsmen.

I would say it is certainly Leatherseller, some of my late husband's family were members of the Leatherseller's Company :)

They have a web site at

I think you may be right Ann, after reading what all that 'Freedom of the City' was about. Sort of a guild hall but you didn't actually have to have that trade to be in the Leathersellers Company. You could have another trade but only be admitted by Paternity, servitude or redemption.

I saw your reply Sis, but didn't take in your link to the Leathersellers - must train my brain to read everything in a post and not selective bits

Beg pardon. 1838- thought I had included. Must have been just in my notes.
What a great bunch of helpers you are - yep I knew that- it's why I posed the question.
Thank you all so much. Shipwrights & leather workers abound in this history.

I can't really see the 'S' in Surry and the 's' in sellers as much of a match but hey, it must be so. Unless of course it's An olde worlde 's'.
