I am looking for any family information for George Sinclair and Catherine Bain.
I think they were married 27 Nov 1835 in Reay, Caithness. I would love to find their parents names. I have found a few George Sinclair and Catherine Bain, I guess they are very common names there
They had 3 daughters before traveling to Prince Edward Island in 1841. I found some christening records but not where the christenings were done (except it was in Reay, Caithness, Scotland). I would think they would have been christened where their parents were married.
    Catherine born 03 Aug 1836
    Ann born 20 July 1838
    Johan 14 Jan 1841
They left Scotland shortly after Johan (Johanna) was born.
Thank you for any help you can send my way.

Hello Sue - welcome to Top Dog,

I have just found the above marriage of a George SINCLAIR to a Catherine BAIN on FreeReg and to add to the information, it states that their abode was Stemster. From what I can gather, this was a tiny settlement about 4 miles from Reay, but there appears to be a number of places called Semster in the Highlands.

By the way, could you pop into your profile and complete your location box, please? ;)

THANK YOU. I dont know FreeReg, but am now checking it out. So....the George and Catherine were married in 1835? Wow. A few years ago I found records of their marriage and even the fathers of both George and Catherine but managed to lose that record and cant find it on line anymore.
Is the location they were living Stemster or Semster?

It means having been born before the marriage. Illegitimate.

That is what I thought BUT George and Catherine were married in 1835 and daughter Catherine was born in 1836. So how can it be Antenuptial. I thought Ante was after and pre is before.

Antenuptial has the same meaning as prenuptial. Have a look here: http://
    legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Ante-nuptial

Catherine was baptised after the marriage but the note says that she was born before it. ;)

The record shows when Catherine was Baptised not when she was born. Baptisms can take place at any age not just after birth.

Duh. Of course. So I have the wrong birthdate for her and probably the other girls....BUT I do have the correct death dates. This just brought out another skeleton from the closet....I do so love those skeletons!
George later ran out on the family. There were 8 children total....5 more after getting to PEI. This family has been one heck of a brick wall.

Unfortunately, none have been mentioned on the FreeReg marriage record.

I have been looking at the baptisms in Reay for George SINCLAIR, but there are a couple of possible contenders, so no definites. Unfortunately, there are no Catherine BAIN baptisms that I can find in Reay, either. :(

Someone has a tree with George and Catherine in it. But they are only showing 2 of the children Finley Cook and George. It can be found here

Remember to always check what you find in other peoples trees though.

Stemster and Baillie farms are marked on the OS maps of the area to the east of Reay (try Bing maps for an online version which you can zoom). They are not marked on Google maps as such, but if you get the location from the OS map you can then go to Google maps. Once you have pinpointed the location you can go to street view which will give you a rough idea of the land and buildings as they are today.

Probably the farm that Grizel is referring to in post #17 above.

Stemster and Baillie are east of Reay, NW of Westfield. Baillie is roughly grid ref 047 654 and Semster roughly 039 658. (You need choose Ordnance Survey map not Road map in Bing)

Hope this makes some sort of sense!
