    I have a couple - Richard and Sophia Webster aged 69 and 63 respectively - in the 1871 census [RG10/1476/56/20] in Potterspury. Richard died 3rd q. 1871.

I'm looking for the death of Sophia - but can't find a suitable candidate - so I 'thought' maybe she remarried. And guess what?- England & Wales FreeBMD Marriage Index, 1837-1915 - has this:
    Year 1862 - Oct-Dec
    Potterspury - vol.3b, page 88 - the following
    Harriet Collison
    James Durrant
    Jesse Lambert
    Hannah Merrinato?
    Sophia Webster

I have found Jesse and Harriet Lambert in 1871. census but not JUames Durrant and the question mark after Hannah's name I can't fathom out.

Sophia was still married to Richard and living with him in 1871. Could this record actually relate to another decade - maybe Oct-Dec. 1871?

    How can I resolve this?

If you use FreeBMD to check the marriage reference (pop in Dec quarter 1862, Potterspury in the reg district plus the volume and page number), just 4 names appear:
    Harriet Collison
    James Durrant
    Jesse Lambert
    Sophia Webster

Hannah Merrinato is not mentioned. If there is a ? after her name, I would surmise that the transcriber was not sure about the reference being relevant for her.
Nope - probably a different Sophia Webster. :)

I see that there are deaths for 2 Sophia WEBSTERs in Potterspury:
    March Q 1885, volume 3b, page 25, aged 83
    June Q 1887, volume 3b, page 16, aged 84.

Now, I know that neither of these ages match with the possible year of birth given in the 1871 census, but remember - the death certificate was only as accurate as the knowledge of the person registering the death. ;)

Then of course, she might have died elsewhere.....

Did they have any children with whom she might have been living when she died?

OK Jan - 1st off we can discount the marriage details.

As for the deaths a good question:
    1] Richard and Sophia had 4 known children - Ellen [4th q. 1843], Susan [4th q. 1846], John Thomas [1st q. 1849] and Elizabeth [4th q. 1852-2nd q. 1853].

2] Prior to Sophia's marriage she had an illegitimate child - Henry Johnson - Sophia's maiden name - [bapt. 30 March 1834]. Henry married [4th q.. 1859] - produced a daughter named Eliza [3rd q. 1860] and the family can be found in 1861 census - along with his own wife's illegitimate child -[RG9/928/49/16]

3] Each of the 3 surviving children produced children before marriage:
Ellen - a son [Arthur] - born 3rd q. 1869] - can be found with Ellen and her parents in 1871 [RG10/1476/56/20] In the 1881 census [RG11/1538/63/20] both Ellen and Arthur are in the Workhouse @ Yardley Gobion.

Susan - with her parents in 1871 - gave birth to a daughter - Elizabeth [2nd q. 1877]. In 1881 census Susan [enumerated as Susanah] is with her sister Ellen in the Workhouse @ Yardley Gobion and is deemed an idiot.

John Thomas - fathered a daughter [Mary Ann] 1st q. 1870 in Yardley Gobion - mother Eliza Gear. 1871 census he is with his parents and Eliza Gear with Mary Ann is with her parents [RG10/1476/90/11] in Yardley Gobion. He has a son - Albert - with Eliza - 4th q. 1872 in Yardley Gobion and then he marries Eliza 27 December 1875 in in Y.G. - witnesses - Henry Johnson and Charlotte Gear [sister of Eliza]

Personally, I don't think any of the children were in a position to look after Sophia. My gut feeling is that one or the other is correct, that Sophia died in the workhouse - but she doesn't appear to be in the workhouse in 1881 census, nor with John Thomas and his wife Eliza and their 4 children and also in the residence was Henry Johnson [RG11/1523/23/28] where the 7 were living in a residence located in what was enumerated as "The Alley".

    Hi Colin

I think you will find Sophia is in the workhouse in 1881. If you look at the
Sophia indexed as Rosetta, to me that looks like Webster.

Welcome back Maureen - haven't 'seen' you in a while.

I think you may well be on to something as she - although age is a bit 'off' - seems reasonable as she is with 5 other relatives there.

No to find her death as she doesn't appear to be there in 1891.

Sorry, can't help you with that Colin. I have some references to Yardley
burials in the Potterspury registers but they start at 1894 which is too
late to identify whether it is the 1885 or 1887 one. The burials on the Potterspury website end earlier so those dates are in between. Yardley didn't get it's own register till 1926.

    Couldn't resist this family again!

Yes, they are fun aren't they?

If you have nothing better to do this weekend, why not have a look at the group of family members in 1881 and see how they are linked - but it is a little - OK a lot - messy.

    I think I'll pass on that Colin. If I didn't have a headache when I started, I'd
certainly have one by the time I'd finished!

Since she was transcribed as Sophia Rosseta in 1881 and other Webster's are in the Workhouse in 1891 - I'm thinking of another mis-transcription.
