If this is the George Edward Thomas we are after, then this is him from Ancestry's RN Register of Seaman's Services In 1901 there was a 5 year old George Edward Thomas in the Muller's Orphan House, Bristol, who was born in Chippenham......RG13/2399/171/9
Ancestry's England and Wales Christening Index has - George Edward Thomas, son of George Thomas and Mary Ann Thomas, born 3rd July 1895 and christened 22nd September 1895 in Chippenham.
@AnnB Thank you for these - I have just found them as well! This George THOMAS wed Mary FARMER in the June quarter of 1895, also in Chippenham. Rootling for deaths, I have found Mary aged 37 in 1900 and a possible George in 1899 aged 52. But nothing definite to ensure that they are the right people yet. Then again, if Mary died, George Junior could have been plonked in the orphanage if George Senior didn't want or couldn't cope. That is.... if they are the right folk....
Ancestry also has his Master and Mates Certificate when he became a Second Mate issued 21st September 1818 and the one when he became a Mate issued 24th June 1926. Both list the ships he served on.
I do hope that this is him - the occupation on his Register of Seaman's Services of a Page would then fit with his occupation in 1911 - if I have found the right lad. He is at The Imperial Hotel, Tenby St Mary in Liberty, Pembrokeshire and working as a "Boots" - not a million miles away from "Page" Registration district number 601 Enumeration district 16 District number 16 Sub district number 1 RG78 code number 1899 Piece number 33141
Aha! One of the granddaughters has just read the email that I sent (I have it tracked ) but she might need to ask her mother as this granddaughter was only a toddler when he died.
I've just found the 1911 entry too - the suspense is killing me. I was supposed to be doing some weeding........
Aaargh! Reply received: "I have asked my sister to look for papers where Mum lived before moving here. I will also look here and ask Mum if she might remember when his birthday was!" Mum is almost 92 and living in a home a couple miles from granddaughter so don't hold your breath.....
Went and did some weeding in the hope of coming back to some Good News.... I don't know why I 'liked' your last message
George died 9th October 1958 at the British Consulate, Gdynia, Poland. He is listed on the Probate website: Code: https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/Calendar?surname=Thomas&yearOfDeath=1958&page=20#calendar Still waiting for a birthday.....
OMG!!! I think we've got him! Just found the British Armed Forces Overseas Deaths and Burials on FMP and, for the death noted above, it says his place of birth was........ Chippenham! I don’t think gobsmacked covers it And,if you remember the newspaper article about the Polish lady escaping to England on board the Baltrover, the ship left from Gdynia.
