Can anyone please advise the meaning of 'Seniority '' in this Baptism ? Is it perhaps saying this is a 4th child of the couple? from Liverpool OPCs online. Baptism: 13 Nov 1797 St Nicholas, Liverpool, Lancashire, England Born: 25 Oct 1797 Abode: New quay Occupation: Mariner Seniority: 4 Where Married: ? Register: Baptisms 1795 - 1797, Page 41, Entry 921 Source: LDS Film 93833 .............................. Heading should ofcourse read St. Nicholas, Liverpool.
I think I've found the Bishop's Transcript, not that it helps. But on the rest of the page the highest number in this column is 7, so I would agree that it possibly means that this is the 4th child of the couple.
Thomas Mitchell - Son of John Mitchell & Rachel (formerly Hinde), his wife. Earlier John b.1790 & Jane b. 1792. Also had previosly found a Mary b. 1795, same couple- no 't' in Mitchell -Ancestry/ Rachel given surname of Kendle- taken from Burials opposite. Just found Mary on L'pool OPCs same mis name of father Baptism: 1 Sep 1795 St Nicholas, Liverpool, Lancashire, England Mary Michell - Daughter of John Michell & Rachel (formerly Hinde), his Wife Born: 6 May Abode: Hackins hey Occupation: Mariner Seniority: 3 Parents Married: This Chapel Register: Baptisms 1794 - 1795, Page 341, Entry 772 Source: LDS Film 93833 So, seniority must mean order of birth. Oh I do hope they really are my 3rd Gt Aunts & Gt. Uncle
My error- didn't look at page top, they are not burials . It says 'formerly' & is actually 'Hinde' his wife -in a faded fashion
There was briefly a very detailed form of baptism which I have seen in County Durham, which gives mother's maiden name and mother's father, plus the birth order of the child, along with the other things you'd expect A less detailed version in Norfolk gave mother's maiden name Did not realise this also happened in Liverpool
Sadly today in further searches, I believe Jane died 1793, buried St. Johns, 16 Aug. 1793. All of the Janes seem to have had a very short life.Mary, I'm still not sure about.
