Do you think the mother's father's name is Richard Hay and he's a Gent(leman) or do you think it is Richard Hay Gent ? The birth father is John Bellamy Plowman...hmm, maybe he was a plowman? However her name stays Susannah Plowman until she marries. This is from England & Wales, Non-conformist and non-parochial registers. 1567-1970
Family Search has several births to a father John Bellamy Plowman and mother Mary Ann around that time frame. e.g. Mary Ann Plowman christened 09 Dec 1793 in Saint Paul, Covent Garden, Westminster, London, England so it appears Plowman is the surname rather than the occupation. As such I would assume that Richard Hay Gent is the name rather than the name and occupation. I am unable to access the images unfortunately - perhaps it can be found on FMP?
I got it on Ancestry. So I shall have to look for more on there to see about siblings. I usually don't go too far out on a limb that far back , but then I'm hardly ever that far back! I don't have FMP right now and got this one from a shaking leaf!! There is a period after Gent. You have to look at the original as the transcription is garbage.
John Bellamy PLOWMAN married Mary Ann HAY on 29th December 1792 in St Paul, Covent Garden. (they both signed their names) So I would say the mothers father was Richard HAY a Gentleman.

There's a very interesting piece about "Maria: The Last Norfolk Broads Lateener" - a racing yacht which John Bellamy Plowman (described as a "merchant adventurer") had built for his daughter Maria for her 21st birthday in 1827. Maria (the yacht) is now housed in the Museum of the Broads at Stalham, 180 years old and still, apparently, in remarkably good condition! http://www. classicboat.co.uk/articles/maria-the-last-norfolk-broads-lateener/
There's a case at the Old Bailey of someone embezzling John and his partners. Code: http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/browse.jsp?id=t18090215-73&div=t18090215-73
Wow! Thank you, everyone. I have rich ancestors????? !!!! I wonder what happened...must be the embezzler. lots for me to read on this Mother's Day! I just came on the computer...wish I had looked sooner.
actually I am quite happy it is Hay. I like the idea of a Gentleman in the family!! A change from all the poor ancestors I have.
I think its been pretty watered down over the years, Chimp. Sure didn't come on a boat to the New World. lol
Thanks Ann...That was an interesting read! I am loving all these stories on family from long ago, as for the most part everyone on my tree, went to work, went home, made babies and went to work again..
I have been reading lot of various articles on line. John Bellamy Plowman was in a business partnership. Bellamy, Robarts and Plowman. They were silk and linen mercers in covent garden. There are several bill books for sale online from their business for atrocious prices. I guess they sold to the Queen. I wonder if the Bellamy was his maternal grandfather? I found a notice of disolving a partnership but at that time it was only Plowman and Robarts. Lots and lots to keep me busy for quite some time. Thank you all.
