… Sliced Bread!
A saying that means the best or the greatest. The first example of this saying was found in the New York Journal-American where journalist Dorothy Kilgallen wrote, “Stewart Granger is the greatest thing since sliced bread.”
But it was today, 7th July back in 1928 that sliced bread was first sold by the Chillicothe Baking Company of Missouri. A chap by the name of Otto Frederick Rohwedder first invented the bread slicing machine back in 1912, but it had been destroyed in a fire before he had a chance to put it properly into action. Needing to get funding again for his invention, it was not for another 16 years before he was in a position to sell his invention commercially.
The bread was advertised as "the greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped".
Oh yes, it is also World Chocolate Day today! (We need chocolate – the dinosaurs didn’t have chocolate and look what happened to them!
