What brilliant research! Thank you. That's them, as I have photos with 'York' on the back, but I thought it was referring to the place.
If you add the children born earlier (Ann (1858), Margaret 1859), Edwin (1860), who died in 1862, Eliza (1862), Mary 1866?), and James Henry (1875/6), who died in 1877, that makes 10 of their own, plus Alice!
There is also a Walter Evans, with children Dick, Jack and Esther (they are labeled 'cousin Esther Evans', 'cousin Dick' etc.); unless of course, that was Amos's middle name - he seems to be the only boy to have survived.

... and do you know, my daughter, who is married to a Frenchman, has called her first daughter Eva, and she knows nothing about any of this research! I shall have to tell her about her namesake.

... or, unless Amos was Esther's father (she did have a son called Walter, so I may have got things wrong).

Just looked on Ancestry, someone has a tree that says Alice Evans was born
12 JAN 1881 and was the daughter of Eliza Evans born 1863. There is no father for Alice.

They have also added this about Alice's marriage to Albert Simpson.

Entry in the parish magazine: The daughter of an old parishioner was married on Holy Innocents' Day. A floral arch, with mottoes, had been erected at the entrance to the churchyard and salutes were fired from the Blacksmith's Anvil.

Wonderful! So someone else is researching the family; I refuse to pay Ancestry, though!

I have to leave for work now, I will take a look at the tree this evening and see if I can find anything I haven't already found.

A quick rummage on Free BMD has revealed that an Alice Ann Evans was born in March, 1879, district Kington (Radnorshire/Herefordshire border), and an Eliza Evans, aged 19 died in March 1879, district Rhayader 116 p.136 (Radnorshire/Breconshire border)!

Could this be our 'Ann Evans', going under her mother's maiden name (Price), if she was born in Dec. 1857, before John and Elizabeth Evans were married?

Could be :) still searching for proof.

This one I posted as a possible earlier isn't your Alice Evans
She was registered by her grandmother Charlotte. So we can knock her off the list of possibles.

I've had no reply, yet, from the Australian Light Horse Association (not even an acknowledgement), despite having sent them 2 emails, and a link to the 'Cousin Arthur' thread.

As we know women seemed to change the year of their birth for many reasons, one of which is that they didn't want to appear older than their husbands, or their husband didn't want it looking like he was younger than his wife.

On the 1939 census Alice says she was born on 12th January 1882 and her husband, Albert in 1885. This would make Alice 3 years Albert's senior.
On the 1911 Census Alice is now only one year older than Albert.
On the 1891 census Alice is with her grandparents and they say she was born 1880.
Alice seems to be getting older the more we go back in time.

But on the 1881 census her grandparents say she was born in 1880 too. If she had been born any later she wouldn't be on the 1881 census.
I have a birth certificate for an Alice Evans born 12th January 1880, notice the day and month, it's the same as on the 1939 census, only the year is different, and as we know she must have been born prior to 1881 or she wouldn't be on that census.

Anyway, the place of birth is given as The Parks, Stocking and the mother's name is Ann Evans, a domestic servant. The Stocking estate was in the parishes of Presteigne and Evanjobb. Someone has started to write the name of the father 'John' but it has been crossed out.

So do you think that Alice was the illegitimate daughter of the illusive Ann
