Wondering if any of you have watched or are watching that BBC series, over here it's on ABC 5.00 pm and repeated 10.00 am the next day. I've been watching it for two or so weeks now and find it fascinating, I'm lost in admiration for the skills, experience and patience of the experts involved in restoring various items brought in by the public.
We have that program running at the moment, last nights was quite touching. A gentleman brought in a little writing box, the type that folds open and turns into a slanting writing box. He said that when his sister died he went in to clean out her house. Whilst in the attic he found the little box in the far corner, it was in a real sorry state, most of the inlay was pealing off and it looked like it had been in a fire. On opening it he found adoption papers....HIS...it turns out that the people he though were his parents were in fact his grandparents and his sister was his mother. The chap doing the restoration did an excellent job on restoring the little box. I really enjoy this show, they have some amazing restorers who take pride in what they do. Before After
Our local community has just started something similar called the Repair Café. Mind you, this is for more modern things such as if your CD player has stopped working or a necklace has broken or a piece of clothing needs mending. There is a café on site and the repair is free - just a donation to charity is required.
Everywhere......had a look at Adelaide and there are some there. Is Unley near you? Aldgate is another one.
I love this show, the items brought in are so interesting & the talent of the restorers is beyond brilliant, I just wish they would tell you how much the restorations cost, like they give you the valuation on The Antiques Roadshow, another favourite show of mine.
We love this programme. Nowadays we don't watch a lot of tv (news too depressing) but we always get drawn into the restorations on The Repair Shop. They are incredible.
Thanks Sue, it's only 38min drive but lives on the southern side of Adelaide city which is why I had to give up going to the local Genealogy Society. I don't play in city traffic anymore. Aldgate a tad further across the Adelaide Hills , beautiful spot. I shall hang onto my 'need t.l.c. items' a bit longer.
I record the programme because around 10 am when it comes on in the morning I usually go to the local supermarket for a few odds and ends, on the way back I pick up a large cup of coffee ($5) from Hold Fast take it home and watch The Repair Shop, quite nice sitting there comfortably watching the programme and sipping the coffee. Today I learnt something from the programme, silver soldering requires less heat than ordinary soldering, how about that , unless I heard wrong. I was under the impression it was the other way round, I've never done any silver soldering but plenty of the other type at home, tech college and work.
Yes going real well thanks, the doctor at the Fracture Clinic is well pleased with the progress. I took the car out for a trip round the block to see how I would go, no real problem but I wouldn't want to drive far, don't want to push my luck.
Disastrous news, I went to record The Repair Shop this morning to watch with my 11 am ish coffee, it's not on, both the 10.00am and 6.00 pm screenings replaced with "Building Australia". I was horrified, however I found some episodes of The Repair Shop on the ABC Iview, it appears there might be a few I haven't watched, the one I watched this morning was new to me. I won't be watching building Australia, sulk, sulk.
