So, I am assuming that the Thomas Hayball born 1791 who turns up in Sheffield/Ecclesall Bierlow is my Thomas, even though mine was born in Chard, Somerset, and the censuses all say he was born in Crewkerne, Somerset -- I can see no sign of Hayballs in Crewkerne until later on in the C19th, so I am hoping this is right o_O

Thomas married Mary, since two of their children were born after civil registration started I thought I would find her maiden name from the GRO index, but I got a different result for each child  -- Haslam or Cowen

Since all but one census has Mary born in Sheffield I am thinking that is where the marriage took place -- the one exception has her born in Crewkerne, so perhaps that is a possibility for the marriage too -- in any case it would have been a little before 1823 when their first child was born -- unless, of course, she was a second wife ....

Just asking in case anyone can find the marriage, I've drawn a blank

This might be the first marriage for Thomas

5/12/1821 Cathedral church of St Peter and St Paul
Thomas Hayball (batchelor) and Hannah Taylor (spinster)
witnesses Joseph Walker, Hannah Fletcher + Joseph Hudson (who signs most entries)

Want to be even more confused?

The 1841 census has the son Charles, born about 1825. There is a baptism for a Charles HAYBALL on 15th January 1826 (born 15th December 1825) son of Thomas HAYBALL, a Joiner, and his wife Hannah. This took place at Sheffield Cathedral.

Thomas HAYBALL married Hannah TAYLOR at Sheffield Cathedral on 5th December 1821.

Hannah HAYBALL was buried on 4th June 1837.

There are quite a few articles in the papers mentioning Thomas Hayball in Sheffield. One is a notice of his marriage -
    Sheffield Independant 2nd December 1837
Mr Thomas Hayball, joiner, to Mrs Mary Haslam

According to England Select Marriages on Ancestry, an Elizabeth Cowen married John Haslem in Bradfield, Yorkshire, on the 25th December 1820. That would explain the two different surnames as the mother’s maiden name on those two entries in the GRO index.....

Yes, I know this address :)

    thank you everyone :)

I had a sense Mary was a second wife and had been previously married, but couldn't find marriages or baptisms of children to help confirm

    Who knows?

I do not think the witnesses will help either they sign for the 2 weddings that take place on 30/11 - Charles Hitchen (or Kitchen) and Joseph Hudson (he who signed at the 1821 marriage)

There is a report of a suicide of a Philp Hayball, in Chard, in December 1839, aged ‘about 60’ - could this be your Philip?

Could be part of the family, I actually have Philip's death as 1829

[Edit] The 1839 death is his son

I'm thinking Thomas's father Thomas might be a brother to Philip, or a cousin, anyway he will remain in the tree for now

How many times have people found in Baptisms or marriages the wrong name given to a Father ? for any amount of reasons. May have been a name on the Cleric's mind or a recent entry.
