I have the birth certificate of my Grandfather Charles Jackson. On the birth certificate is the name of his father, William Jackson of Washingley. I looked at the 1841 census and find three William Jacksons, all the right age (if born either side of census date) and they all live in Washingley Huntingdonshire. I wonder where I go from here.

Thank you, I do have the name, she was Annie Limmage. I'll have another look for marriage.

There is a marriage of a William JACKSON to Fanny LIMAGE on 29 November 1869 at Lutton (marriage cert on Ancestry). William is a widower and gives his father's name as William (a labourer).

There is a birth reg for a Charles William JACKSON - September quarter 1883, Peterborough Registration District. The GRO have the mother's maiden name transcribed as SIMAGE - I'm assuming this is your Grandfather.

(William was previously married to Mary Ann JINKS on 16 July 1860 at Lutton (cert on Ancestry) where his father is named as William, a labourer). So this looks as though it could be your chap.

I found two Williams on the 1841 census with an older William in the same household who was a labourer - one in the household of William and Catherine and the other in the household of William and Ruth. There is another William, but he is in the household of a Thomas Jackson, Carpenter.

You need to follow the Williams through the census to try to work out which one is yours as they were both born and baptised about the same time and in the same area (again, baptisms on Ancestry).

I think I know which one is your William, but without knowing how much you want to do yourself, as that is really the fun bit, will leave it at that for now - we do love solving these things on the Forum, but I think sometimes we do too much too soon and take that fun away from the person asking the initial question.

Just give us a shout if you need more help though.

A VERY VERY late reply Jellylegs, thank you for your information. Despite looking carefully, in the past week, I have the 3 Williams 1841 census details and I cannot work out which is the correct one. I feel the 2 that lived on the Bullock Road are the most likely but both of their sons were Baptised at St Peter's Lutton a year apart. I would appreciate your help, but realise this may be far too late. Thank you
