    Where was it?
i have a detailed 2014 road atlas of England but I cannot find Upper Kinsham, Herefordshire. On the Jan. 13, 1801 baptism of Thomas Powell, my 3x gr. grandfather, it states baptism place as Upper Kinsham, Hereford. ( At least that is what it is transcribed as since the original is not shown. ) I am "guessing" it to be in the Hereford/Sutton/ Much Cowarne area as that is where the family stayed, but no luck finding it.

3 miles north east of Presteigne.
Domesday has it: Hundred of Leintwardine, County Shropshire.
Map has it near Coombes Moor, Kingston, Lingen, Stapleton and Presteigne.
Hope I have that just about right.
Oops! That's 3 mules not miles. What the heck are mules?

The only mules I know are a cross between a donkey and horse.

Sure is. Never heard of 'Upper' Kinsham though, always just known it as Kinsham. Never actually thought that there might be an Upper and Lower, but looking at the map I can understand why. Not far from me. I live in Knighton, work in Presteigne and Kinsham is about 3 miles further on. The church that your ancestors were baptised in was an estate church. All Saints

I assume that his parents were James Powell and Mary Booth married in Kinsham on 30th July 1799

Maybe the old timing that a mule traveled at 2 1/2 miles per hour and oxen at 2 miles per hour therefore making travel faster by mule?

    An estate church is....

Ok the town in which I live has a church which is a parish church. It was built and paid for by funds from the parish.

Kinsham was a piece of land (estate) owned by one family. They built a big house on their land (estate), also they built houses for their workers on their farms and their servants. They also built a church for themselves and their workers to attend.

The difference is that the church was owned by the estate not by a parish.

I've searched and I can't find anything. There is one more possible birth....

There is a baptism for a John Powell on 14th October 1806 in Upper Kinsham with a mother Mary Powell but there is no father mentioned.

Trouble is with that is, there was a marriage of a Thomas Powell to an Ann Beaman in 1781 in Kinsham. The Mary, mother of John, may have been one of their daughters who had an illegitimate child.

Unless of course you know that John is one of yours.

This from 'A Church Near You'

'All Saints' Kinsham is a former estate church built in the grounds of the Arkwright Family's rather grand shooting lodge, Kinsham Court. The Remembrance Hymn "O Valiant Hearts" was written here. All Saints is a pretty and much loved little church which has recently undergone extensive restoration and repair without spoiling its unique character and charm. It is the annual venue for the traditional Kinsham Village Fete usually held on the third Saturday in June.'
