I have someone on a 1861 English census record showing as aged 25, “Unmarried”. The person aged 1 immediately below her is showing as her “N-Daur”.

It obviously means something daughter, but I can’t fathom out what the “N” part of the reference could possibly mean. Any ideas please? There is no record of the baby’s father on the census record with respect to this family, just these two people.

    Thank you :)

I have seen nurse child on a census. Could it mean nurse daughter? I must admit my first thought was natural daughter.

Hi Libby. That’s good to know for future reference, but I think Steve had it spot on in this instance, as I’ve since found the baptism record that says illegitimate daughter. I appreciate the suggestion though. :)
