I can't get to the site from the link I posted and I can't find any first names on the site, either, so I hope we're all on the same page ...

I think that means that the "About Us" page was updated on 27.02.2007. If you look right at the bottom of the page, it says
Copyright © : 1980 - 2014 Name Origin Research so it seems to be keeping itself up-to-date.

Where did you find the number of Jees in the 1911 Census? What with no first names and no Census results (right or wrong), I feel I'm not exploiting this site properly. :(

I just put Jee in the surname box on their home page. Ancestry gives 393 in England and 4 in Wales if a similar procedure is followed. To me this shows site is very dubious

Obviously Celtic surnames are not too well supported there!

My surname it tries to suggest is related to Joseph, Josef and of course the Jose with the accent which is common in Spain and Portugal.

My surname is JOSE - pronounced almost like something belonging to Joe - i.e Joe's. Not exactly phonetically correct because the the S is too long - more like Joe-sss

From my understanding, the name is Romano-Celtic and was derived from the word Ioseus, which meant a "go-between" who smoothed trading between the Romans and the Cornish with regard to the tin industry here in Cornwall.

Sadly, I have seen people who have bought these surname scrolls from similar sites and been sold a "pup" as it is known.
Jose has various derivations - the Spanish/Portugese/South American ones, as well as the Cornish ones. But, if you are Cornish, then the derivation is NOT from the surname Joseph and similar!

    Oll an gwella!

Glad to see you Mark!! I have a very long line of Jose's and Jose Marias's in my husband's tree and always wondered how you got that name in Cornwall. I think they pronounce it almost the same as yours in Portugal.

Hope all is well with you.......

I can't get it to bring up up any 1911 results for me, wherever I put the name: home page or index. But then I've always been a technophobe. ;)

I tend to think this was via Ancestry's 1911 census page.
