Biit of a schamozzle but here is the basic data; Hannah Briggs (sometimes Hannah Harriett Briggs) [GRO: BRIGGS, HANNAH; [mother] PEDGRIFT GRO Reference: 1848 J Quarter in WANGFORD Volume 13 Page 540]. Note that the GRO says her mother’s maiden name was Pedgrift. However she is claimed in family trees to be the daughter of Rhoda Blowers and John Briggs. I cannot find a marriage for either John Briggs with Rhoda Blowers nor with a Pedgrift. Meanwhile I also cannot find a baptism for a Rhoda Blowers or Pedgrift. Back at the ranch, Hannah Briggs has a child, Mary Ann Briggs in 1871, no other surname on the GRO but I suspect the father is a William Calver who was living in the Briggs household. Next up Hannah married Robert Calver, brother of William. They had 4 children together before Mr Calver died. Then Hannah (as widow Calver) married my relative John Keable (also Keeble, Cable, Kable). They had an additional 2 children together: Alice Louisa and Agnes Ethel, both registered Cable and Briggs. As a real topper, Alice Louisa Cable marries her cousin William Keable in 1912! I would like to know whose genes Hannah Briggs carried into the Family Tree without having to dig my way through DNA test lists!
There is on FS a Rhoda Blowers 13/1/1834 father Henry Blowers and mother Mary Benns, Beccles Suffolk. It is rather a bit early as Hannah was born in 1848 but perhaps Hannah was the daughter of John Briggs and ? Pedgriff and John later married Rhoda.
There is a 25 year Rhoda Pedgrift on 1841 age 25 born Norfolk. Page 7 HO107 758/16 Living with John Pegdfrift 75 Eliza 30 Charles 35 Edmund Miller 14 Event place is Alburgh Norfolk
On the Ancestry Norwich Calver Family Tree (that I cant access) who is Susannah Pedgrift 1814 Norfolk mentioned?
1841 Wangford, 35 year Samuel Calver is with wife Susan 25, daughter Susan 10 and 2 year old Anna. I wonder is this Susannah Pedgrift who marries Samuel in 1838..Samuel dies and then she marries/or not, John Briggs and they have Hannah Harriet.
NOw to the 1861 John Briggs head 47 Laxfield Suffolk Rhoda Briggs 49 Ellough Suffolk James Briggs 20 George Briggs 17 Samuel Briggs 13 ROSANA Briggs 10 age out a bit. ROSANA/Hannah? Charles Briggs 6 4 RG09 1185/132 Not sure if any of this makes any sense but this appears to be your John Briggs and his wife Rhoda. But I was wondering if Rhoda and John took in the children of Samuel Calver and Susannah. There are a couple of deaths of a Samuel and a Susannah Calver that could make this a possibility.
1851 census Rhoda and John Briggs have three children with them. Her daughter Mary Lagon, her son William Lagon and Johns son Henry Briggs. So I think the children on the 1861 must be someone else’s. Samuels and Susannah’s? Your missing Hannah? (Rosanna) Or am I only dreaming If some of the other children on the 1861 have mothers maiden name as Pedgrift then we are in business. Otherwise back to the drawing board.
Try Samuel Calver registered June 1845 Wangford. I think he is the Samuel Briggs age 13 (out) on the 1861. Hannah may have been a baby when the Briggs took her in and not registered as yet.
1 Nov 1837 John Briggs 26 bachelor Labourer of Ellough. Rhoda Sagan 26 Widow Workwoman of Ellough. Grooms Father is John Briggs - Labourer. Brides Father is Thomas Pedgrift - Labourer. Witnesses are Henry Briggs and Mary Ann Briggs.
WOOT!! I have found the solutions myself! Rhoda Pedgrift, parents Thomas and Jemima on the 1841 Census first married a James Sagan (Sagon/Saron etc) and had 2 children, William and Mary. Look above the Briggs on Piece 1039 Book 8 Folio 6 Page number 6 So Rhoda married John Briggs as Rhoda Sagan in 1837 [freeBMD: Marriages Dec 1837 BRIGGS John Wangford 13 1091 SAGAN Rhoda Wangford 13 1091 The mix-up at the 1871 Census was where some people got the name Rhoda Blowers for Rhoda Pedgrift but she and her husband John Briggs were merely co-tenants with the Blowers. Hannah (not Rosanna) Briggs married Robert Calver. Then she married John Keable, had a daughter registered as Alice Louisa Cable and this Alice Cable married her "cousin" William Keable in 1912! OMG!! What a schamozzle!
Excellent Sis....so Rhoda was a Pedgrift and she married Sagan, transcribed as Lagon on the 1851. So what do you think of Rhoda and Susannah being sisters?
She fooled me for a fewminutes- but Rhoda Pedgrift married to John Briggs in 1837 could not have been in 2 places at once!
Can't find that marriage. But a Sussane Calver widow marries a Stephen Stanard 1864 Norfolk father Samuel Pedgrift.
