William and Lillian worked for Samson Rogers in Illinois, William was a general servant and she a domestic (if I remember correctly). Check the census after their arrival in USA.

I have now found the 1910 emigration detail and he was a farmer.

He may have stated he was a farmer when he emigrated but on the 1910 census he is a servant, doing general work for Samson Rogers, a merchant. Lillian is a maid.

I sometimes wonder if the occupation on emigration documents is what the person wants to be, rather than what they have been. It happened that way to a couple of mine...

I think they had to put something......it all depended on what occupations were required to be filled. It gave them a better chance of getting on a ship.

The 1901 census has his father occupation as gardener's labourer and brother Edward as a horseman on farm.Maybe he was a worker on a farm.

Quite possibly their proposed occupation was suggested by their country of intent advertising for those particular talents in migrating people.

I think, as it ends in ‘d’ it’s supposed to be Helford.

You might find the Cornwall Connicotts and the Somerset Connicotts are related. There is a Francis Sydney or Sydney Francis Connicott emigrating to Cook Illinois (where William and Lillian are living)in 1904. His father is Edwin Connicott from Somerset.
