Do I remember rightly? Was it the 1980s or 1990s? I seem to remember hearing that young people in Ireland were recruited to transcribe old registers, and the transcriptions placed in the hands of county heritage centres. I had dealings with one of those Heritage Centres earlier this year. They now appear to have been hived off as commercial organisations and they charge what I think is excessive amounts for access to their information. Does anyone know the history of this and when it all started? Barbara
The YTS (Youth Training Scheme) in Ireland ran from 1983 to 1989. Before 1983 it was the Youth Opportunities Programme (YOP) and in 1989 it dropped Scheme to become just Youth Training. (Thus spake the former Civil Servant )
Thought... If the scheme worked like it did in England, it would have been down to the local Careers Service to come up with individual contracts with employers. Therefore, not every Heritage Centre might have had a contract plus for those that did, contract dates might differ from county to county.
