Another person who can't settle on a name and proving to be a right royal pain :D

Liston Joseph WOODGER born 1853 Frensham, Surrey, bapt. either 10th or 16th of July, as Neston Joseph [?]

Have him with parents Thomas & Elizabeth in 1861 [as Jacob]; and in 1871 [Joseph Wooder] away from home working as a carter; he is a witness at his father's 2nd marriage signing as Joseph Woodgear

Then he disappeared in a puff of smoke, and was never heard from again  unless one of you guys can find him :p

I may be completely barking up the wrong tree here, but there is a William Woodger and family who appear in the 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 census - he is supposedly born 1853 in Frensham and is a carter or farm labourer in Frensham (1891) and Headley, Hants. in the others. I can't find this chap in the 1871 or 1861.....

There is a family in Wishanger, Headley in 1871 headed by a Richard Smith, someone has added information suggesting that the family listed are actually Woodgers, and there is a William born 1853 Frensham.

    here is the note they added;
    Woodger rather than Smith

Baptised as Richard Woodger in 1820 before his mother Hannah Woodger married Richard Smith in 1821, also buried as Richard Woodger. All his children used the name Woodger.

    [edit: similarly in 1861 RG 9; Piece: 433; Folio: 17; Page: 1]

I think I just ruled him out, sorry Ann :( ... still stuck

Oh, this is so annoying, of his eight siblings only one survived to adulthood, so I was really hoping to find out that he married and had 10 kids who lived to 100 :(

I can't find a death. No likely looking passenger lists. Army? Navy? hmmm ... [no clues at National Archives or FMP]

You've probably already found the marriage on Anc. between Stephen Maidmen and Elizabeth Woodyer (13th April 1872 at Frensham Parish Church)? Joseph was a witness (well, I presume it is your Joseph) where he gives his name as Joseph Woodear. The other witness was Ellen Maidmen.

    No help, I know.....

Yep that's his sister Elizabeth, and he was also a witness when his father Thomas remarried the following year (forgot to put the date in post#1), so have some record of him until 1873 ... then, poof!

I will just toss this in - nothing at all to confirm he could be your man but other than alien abduction........

J Wooger trooper service no 1375 is commemorated on the Boer War Memorial at Holy Trinity Guildford - died of disease 24/5/1901 Petrusburg
the regiment was South African Constabulary

This is totally irrelevant; trying again at TNA using variant spellings including Woodyer, plus Surrey -- found this:

Letter from Robert [Horne], Bishop of Winchester, Winchester, to William More, Loseley. He asks that John Slyfield of Byfleet, licensed to keep an alehouse, should be punished: he was detected at Horne's visitation as allowing dancing on the Sabbath, at which Richard Snosemere was the minstrel. He also asks More to examine William Ellis, Robert Joiver, the wife of Mellish and Tristram Griffith, all of Witley, as to whether they heard Nicholas Woodyer assert 'that women had no souls'. The vicar should be present at the examinations.
