Could anyone tell me the name of the place 2nd row down? I have tried to find what I thought I read, but the place didn't existScreen Shot 2016-07-13 at 17.43.00.png

Well I hadn't read it as Dorset, thank you.

It's for Mary A Lock, who was either 14 or 64 in 1861. I'm going with 14, but she is blind and staying with her cousin in Woolwich, so could be either.

But not finding her in any other record, even with this place, at the moment

Well for what it's worth, I reckon it's 'Helton West[moreland]' - the good enumerator of Woolwich having given up on trying to spell it correctly and squeeze the whole county name into the space provided:).

I reckon her age is recorded as 64

Interestingly there is a Mary Anne Lock in Ketton, Rutland in the 1851 Census. She is aged 5 which fits in rather well with the information in the 1861 Census.

Ah the problem with my post about the Rutland lass is that she's in the 1871 Census (RG10/1340/154/63) and she is not blind but working as a housemaid. It still seems an interesting coincidence.......

My two pennyworth for what it it's worth is Hilton or Helton as all seem to agree, the "other word" I thought was Dorset but I wouldn't rule out a cramped up "District" as Philippa suggested. That "other word" certainly doesn't look like the word Kent following Erith in the line below.

Sorry my thoughts could not be more positive.

It could well be :). If she is that age she might not have been born blind. I haven't got anywhere with finding her in any possible suggestions for her birth place. Having looked at it even closer, I'm not even sure where in Kent her cousin Thomas came from now, or his age..! I'm going round in circles, I'm not sure if it's even the right family

The Thomas I am looking for was born 12th May 1809 in Woolwich to Jonathan and Susannah. To help me pinpoint the right family I'm trying to find his uncle by finding out about Mary A
I never found Thomas in a previous census to 1861, his father died 1837 and mother 1849 - she's not with him in 1841
So is this 1861 census the right family? Screen Shot 2016-07-14 at 12.49.16.png

Is he 46 or 49? Is his wife Ruth 51 or 57? Is he from Woolwich? ('Do' is Kent) A later Thomas who in the navy and was born and lived at Woolwich is always born 1811 but never has a wife with him so I can't link it all up. Argh :headbang:

Yes. It looks like the enumerator had started to write Woolwich, got as far as Wool and then overwrote with the ditto mark.

I would say 49, comparing it with a 9 further up the page.

51. The sweep of the 7 elsewhere is different.
For what its worth I saw it the same, befor i even saw DBs post.
