I am a little confused! (Yes, I know, I hear you saying "What's new?"). I have a marriage between Henry Alexis and Lemira Pearce on 31 March 1839, stated in different searches to have all the same details, including the date, but at two different churches!!

Some records state St. Augustine's Church Bermondsey, and others state St. John's Church, Horsleydown.

Ancestry show the St. Augustine's marriage to have come from the England Select Marriages, FHL Film No 2214355, St. Augustine's, Bermondsey.

But.......Ancestry also have an image of the Marriage from the Parish records of St. John, Horsleydown.

I can find no record of a St. Augustine's in either Bermondsey or Southwark, or Horsleydown. I know that Horsleydown is no longer known as that, but I know where it was. St. Augustine's sounds Catholic to me, but I cannot even find it in the Catholic records!

I know it does not really matter as both records have identical details, and I will enter it under St. John's as that is where I have the image of the actual marriage, but I am wondering why this would have happened! Any suggestions from those wiser than me please? Cheers, Diana

Might the Banns have been called at St. Augustines & the marriage itself at St. John's? Many of my Family sere Christened & married at St.John's & lived inthe area-others at St.Mary Magdalen.

A google will show St. John's in Fair/Tooley St.

Hi Diana, Genuki mentions St Augustine's Bermondsey it was Church of England.

    http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SRY/Bermondsey

Could it be one of the couple was from the parish of St Augustine, and the other from St John, in which case banns would be read in both parishes

Ancestry regularly confuse banns registers with marriage registers

Thanks Wendy, Yes I did google and find St. John's. It was St. Augustine's that I could not find. I also did think about the banns being at one Church and the marriage at another, but didn't know that was possible (being the heathen that I am, and having married in a Registry Office myself!) Still not too old to learn something new every day!;) Diana

That's strange Lizzy...I did look at Genuki but didn't see it there! Must open my eyes more (or not do research before I have had my morning cup of coffee!)
    Thanks so much! Diana

Yes I have been confused with this myself Steve...It would be much better if they had separate entries for the two...especially as the marriages could often not take place at all, even though the Banns were read! Last minute cold feet maybe!:( Cheers, Diana

Banns can even be called in three churches. Mine were: my husband's parish, the parish I lived in, and the church I used where we were married. Trust us to make it more complicated. ;)

St Augustine's wasn't consecrated until 1878 and so I'm pretty sure you're safe assuming the marriage was in St John's Horsleydown! Just treat the 'select marriages' entry as nonsense and you'll be well away:).
