    Your opinions would be welcome:

2 sisters, Rachel born 1859, Lucinda born 1864.
Lucinda was my great granma. Rachel died aged 31 (TB).

This photo is definitely Lucinda, but probably in her 50's: Lucinda (1).jpg

This photo is the 2 sisters, probably in their late teens/early 20's: Rachel & Lucinda Vickers.jpg

    Which one is which?

And to complicate matters, this photo was among my great grandad's papers:
Is it Lucinda? Or is it Lucinda's photo of her late sister?: LV1 - 1.jpg

All suggestions welcome! (I'm swinging back & forth, like a chimp in a tree :))

Sticking my neck out a bit here, I think in the picture of the two girls it may be Lucinda, the elder one, sitting down. As well as looking (possibly) a bit more serious, I think the slightly broader face is a better match with the one known to be Lucinda.

As for the third one - it's a carte de visite by T. Braybrook of West Hartlepool. The Cleveland FHS have a list showing that they've found records of him in 1884 and 1898/99, which is not to say that he wasn't active between those dates too. The list is at

The vignette style of portrait (an oval image that fades away at the edges) was especially popular in the 1890s, so that would make Lucinda's age 31-41, and Rachel 26-31 (when she died). I originally thought this was Lucinda too, but now I'm leaning about 60/40 towards Rachel. The features are perhaps a little sharper than Lucinda's, which also matches my interpretation of the joint portrait.

Others will know better than me how to date the dress and hair, which might be a bit more reliable than what I think.

(I wrote this before reading Genie1's reply - looks like we partly agree!)

My thougts are that Lucinda is the seated girl in the first picture and the solo picture is Rachel.

Comparing the shape of the nose and the darkness of the eyes, I agree with MollyMay, the standing girl and the third photo are the same, and the seated girl more closely matches Lucinda (photo 1).

    I would agree with Genie1.

Lucinda, being the younger, would be standing while her elder sister is seated.

If you look at the mouth of Lucinda in the first picture, the girl standing and the girl in the third picture, they are all the same - lips closed in the same way, whereas the girl seated has her lips slightly apart - but that's just my opinion.

I was t sure until I saw the last photo, that of her sister. Sister on the right, standing. She hasn’t changed much really when you compare the third photo of her. Lucinda sitting and photo number one.

It's early here but mayhap Lucinda has lighter coloured eyes than Rachel?

    Thanks for all your efforts!
    I suppose it's something I'll never solve.
    My take:
It is logical that the elder of the 2 sisters be seated (and the standing girl does look younger) - so that means that Lucinda is standing.
The 3rd photo (Harrogate portrait) - to me - looks more like the seated girl, so I think it's Rachel.

I did say it was early, the seated lady appeared to have lighter eyes but maybe it was just that the photo in the area of upper face seemed a little more faded than that of the lady standing, whose darke eyes were noticeable.

Having another look, danged if I don't see the same lady being 'Mother', Standing lady & 3rd Lady alone. Just the quirk of the mouth which may be totally unfair to the seated lady who just wasn't in a quirky mouth mood. ;)

Hope I don't regret pressing post reply.

The one standing is the younger. She seems about 14 years of age.

IMHO the first photo, the lady sitting down and the third photo are the same lady.
