    Their children

Last seen 1871 - Henry James born 1856 at Camborne living with his parents and siblings at Stray Park Lane . Not seen afterwards.

Last seen 1881 -Eliza Ann James born 1861 at Camborne . A general servant for the Carne family at Falmouth. Not found afterwards

Last seen 1881- Charles James born 1863 at Camborne living at Pengegon with his parents and 2 siblings. Not found afterwards.

Last seen 1881- John James born 1868 at Camborne living at Pengegon with parents and 2 brothers.

I have been able to eliminate this Eliza Ann James she is on the 1891 census as E J Cornelius, and her widowed mother Ann is in the household, but Ann's POB and YOB do not match your Ann (Buzza) James
    upload_2019-6-20_19-33-32.png

This one looks more promising, but I am not certain if it is your lady
    upload_2019-6-20_19-41-47.png

Samuel Thomas and his wife Eliza can be found on the 1891 census
RG12/1841/93/19 - Trenance Vean, Trenance, Mullion, Helston
Eliza age 28 (b1864 - so a bit out) gives a pob as Camborne

Perhaps worth further investigation? A Charles JAMES, aged 23, a Miner, Cornwall, was a passenger on the "City of Chester" bound for New York, arriving 21 June 1886.

Several emigration records for a John JAMES born c1868 but there is one for a John JAMES, aged 20, Miner, who could be from Cornwall (the writing is very faint but his place of birth/residence? does seem to end in "….wall") who emigrated to New York on the "Etruria" arriving on 4 June 1888.

Forgot to say on the above post, but both the records can be seen on Ancestry.

    It is her :)
Now found her in 1901 at Mullion with Samuel who was 10 years older than her. Her place of birth is Pengegon(Pengiggan). Can't find them in 1911 but Cornwallopc has a 16 Sept 1904 age 52 burial of Samuel Thomas at Mullion.
Found Samuel in the newspaper in 1904. Inquest into his death.
Eliza marries Mark Bray in 1906 and in 1911 she is living with him at 27,Goldolphin Road,Helston.
Will see if I can find Charles now.

    Back to searching again!

Familysearch has a 3 Aug 1891 marriage in Ironwood, Michigan of Charles James birth 1866 England and his parents are William James and E A Buzza. Charles married Elizabeth A Gonanon.
Three years out for his age and E A Buzza instead of Ann. Possibility?

I also pondered that Janet. It is hard to make out what the letters were & what the writer intended.

The actual record of the marriage of Charles JAMES & Elizabeth GONANON at Ironwood on 3 August 1891 is on Ancestry and shows his occupation as Miner, so he does sound a very likely candidate for your Charles JAMES doesn't he.

Could this be relevant also? Marriage at Amador, California on 6 August 1898 between John JAMES, native of England, aged 30 & Laura EDDY, native of England, aged 20 and what caught my eye was the fact that the witnesses were a Charles JAMES & an Elizabeth A JAMES, residents of Jackson, California.

California Voters List of 1896 for Armador shows that John JAMES is a Miner, aged 29, born in England and was naturalised on 14 February 1894. The 1896 Voters List also has an entry for Charles JAMES, aged 30, Miner, born England and naturalised on 28 July 1896.

Looks as if the above John JAMES was in San Quentin prison on 31 August 1898. He received a 2 year sentence for Burglary and, if you can access Ancestry via your local Library, there is a photograph of him. He entered San Quentin on 31 August 1898 and was discharged on 30 April 1900. However, I seem to lose track of him after his discharge so cannot really check if he is likely to be your John JAMES.

Interesting about the 2nd marriage. Were the parents mentioned?
    Where was John James naturalised?
Can't find them in the censuses yet.

Unfortunately not. I cannot find the naturalisation papers for either Charles or John JAMES although the dates are mentioned in the California Voters List of 1896. Nor have I definitely managed to find them in census records - wouldn't you just know it! The only likely Charles JAMES (given that his birthdate is shown as 1866 in his marriage record) I can find is one in San Quentin prison in the 1900 California census and he is described as born c1866 in England and is a Labourer. Ancestry shows that he was imprisoned for Grand Larceny for 2 years starting on 25 October 1899 being released on 25 June 1901 and he was aged 33 of Amador. There is a photograph of him on his prison record.

I can find Elizabeth A GONINAN in the 1880 census of Franklin, Houghton, Michigan living with parents William & Margaret and siblings Grace, Margaret & Thomas but then nothing apart from her marriage record. Sister Margaret marries a George Albert BRIDGEMAN on 4 June 1894 at Ironwood and then I lose track of her also.

Sorry, I am not being much help here!

Thanks so much for that. It is so annoying when they put England if they come from Cornwall. The Cornish are not English.
I think that Charles and John James's father was in trouble with the law in Cornwall. Shall see my friend this week to check.

There is a record on Ancestry for William JAMES born c1817 of Cornwall who was tried at the County Sessions on 20 October 1840 but was found Not Guilty of House Breaking. Another mention of a William JAMES, aged 49, married, Miner, of Gulval, who appears in the Bodmin Gaol records of 1866 for stealing a brooch and ring. Don't know whether or not this is your friend's William JAMES and there are certainly quite a few mentions of the criminal activities of a William JAMES in the Cornwall newspapers.

The Gulval one wasn't William James.
At one point William and his father were both in court over stealing.
