I am trying to pinpoint my Grandfather William Fenwick’s birth.
I had no contact with this side of the family until comparatively recently, so no personal knowledge at all, but am now in touch with the family and have information, pictures etc but his birth is eluding us all up to now. There are a few contenders but according to my Aunts there were two Billy Fenwicks living in their street alone !
Possibly the best information I have is from the 1939 NHS Register which gives his date of birth as 30th July 1891 and although his family had given me a slightly different day, I thought I was up an running - but couldn’t narrow down a birth in the correct quarter.
He married on 3rd May 1924 in North Shields and his marriage certificate gives his age as 27, which differs by a few years! And his father is given as Thomas Fenwick (Deceased)
He died on 27th August 1956 and his death certificate gives his age as 66.
My Aunts confirm that as they remember, this was his correct age at death.
The only other reference to his age is a report in a company magazine with reference to a lifeboat rescue, which I have researched and was made 10/2/1952 and his age was reported as 60.
He worked as a fitter for Armstrong Whitworth and was killed in a road accident in North Shields when leaving work at the factory. Both his Marriage Certificate in 1924 and my Dad’s Birth certificate in 1925 give his occupation as Fitter/Turner and on my Parents Marriage Certificate in 1946 is given as aircraft inspector. All or any information I have for Billy locates him in the Tynemouth/North Shields/Newcastle area, Exception is an old theatre programme showing him working as a carpenter at The Palace Theatre Lincoln possibly in the 1920’s.
