William was tried in Limerick in 1828 and sent to the colony of N.S.W. on the Gorvernor Ready. He was assigned to Elizabeth Pitt of Richmond and entered into a defacto relationship with Mary White, an Irish girl who came as a free person on the duchess of Northumberland.

William and Mary had a son Michael in 1839 in Northumberland and used the surname Brophy at this time. He and Mary also had a daughter Margaret [1840] in Northumberland. William died in 1844 under the surname Brophy.

Mary went on to marry a John Callinan in West Maitland in 1846 and had three children to him. Catherine [1847], John [1849] and Mary Jane [1852]. John died in 1858.

Mary went on to marry two more times John Hearn [1860] James Caffrey [1872].

The five children to Mary went on to use various derivations of the Callinan surname, Calnan, Calnen, Callahan, Callain until 1870. Then all families apparently went on to use the surname Callaghan which continued to the present day.
