William was born in Linthwaite Yorkshire, baptised 30/9/1780
He fathered 12 children and his wife died in 1831
    In 1841 HO107 piece1274 book 6 folio 7 page 6 in Clough Almondbury
he can be found with his son Eli (b1821)
In 1851 William is living with his son John, wife and 6 children in Worship St. Shoreditch
    HO107/1533/61/6
Eli is in John's Place Shoreditch with his wife and children in 1851( surname Collon)

I cannot find William in 1861, so can anyone find a death for him?

I'm really struggling with this. William doesn't seem to have died but I just wonder if he is registered as Walter Cotton (died 1859). I can't of course follow this up, but it might be worth exploring if all else fails.

Thanks Flook - that one is age 0 - from the GRO index:(

Cotton is one of those names that can be dreadfully mangled - Cottom, Coton,
Collon, Cotten and the list goes on.....
Glad I had not missed the blindingly obvious though;)

There's a death of a William Cotton in Huddersfield in Mar qtr 1855, age 74. Ancestry has a burial which might be the same chap in Slaithwaite with East Scammonden on 31 Jan 1855; the age is given in the register as 70, and the address is High House, Linthwaite. Worth looking into? (Sorry, I can't do this myself just now.)

That does look promising Arthur, I admit to not thinking he might have returned to his birth place, some of his children did stay there, other migrating to London - I will have to do a bit more work on it as there were plenty of Cottons in Slaithwaite/Linthwaite, many of them 'mine';), but High House is an address I know.
    Thank you.
