For many years now I have been attempting to clarify information about Catherine. Her death according to the Parish register for Rutland was 1 Jun 1830, yet William, her husband, re-married on 28 April 1829, shown as a widower on his marriage cert to Mary Gregory.

    Hi Tracker,

How certain are you that William who married Mary Gregory is the same William who married Catherine in 1824?

I found these children baptised in Empingham with parents William and Catherine.

    1. Charles Grant 15 Apr 1827, Empingham
    2. John Grant 27 Dec 1829, Empingham.

The only 1841 census I can find to fit age wise etc with Charles and John - father William is:

    1841, Empingham. HO107; Piece: 895; Book: 2, Folio: 18; Page: 31
    William Grant 30
    Hannah Grant 25
    Charles Grant 15
    John Grant 11
    Henry Grant 8
    George Grant 6 Weeks

According to Family Search, the marriage between Catherine COLLIN and William GRANT took place on 17th May 1824 at Tickencote, Rutland. As marriages often, but not always, took place in the bride's parish, if the parish register for Tickencote could be seen to check who Catherine's parents - or siblings - were, there might be a clue in the witness names.

    From Rutland Burial Index 1813-1990:

1 June 1830 at Empingham Catherine GRANT of Empingham, aged 28
20 September 1856 at Empingham William GRANT of Empingham, aged 65

This is the only burial for a Catherine GRANT on the Index.

Could this be the baptism for Catherine (source Parish Register Transcript of Exton & surrounding parishes (which includes Tickencote) up to 1812:

28 November 1802 at Exton Catherine COLLIN daughter of John & Sarah COLLIN

Fits in well the burial record and there is no baptism at Tickencote for Catherine.

There is a marriage at Empingham on 8 May 1798 of a John COLLIN, of the parish, bachelor, to Sarah KIRBY, of the parish, spinster (source parish register transcripts of Whissendine & surrounds up to 1812).

Not that this answers your question re the second marriage of William GRANT.

I saw the burial for William Grant in 1856 and looked at census returns for him, I do think as Tracker said that this William probably married Mary Gregory in 1829; therefore I don't think he's Catherine's ex husband. Although the William whose details I've posted appears a little young to have married in 1824 he is the father of Charles Grant who is age 24 in 1851, and William in 1861 has aged by 5yrs!!!!

I meant to add (got called to the phone) I doubt very much that William Grant married before his wife's death in 1830. Empingham being a small place means it wouldn't be possible for him to state he was a widower in 1829. William Grant married to Mary Gregory HAS to be a different William - unless the parish record date entry is wrong, which is doubtful.

I think you are correct. There are two William GRANT's in Empingham in the 1841 census. The one married to Mary is shown as a Farmer aged 50 and does not have any children corresponding to the baptisms you found for the children of William & Catherine. The other is born c1811 (your family in post 3), which could in reality be anything from 1806, an Ag Lab with children Charles and John plus a Henry aged 8 then a big gap to a George aged 6 weeks.

Henry GRANT looks to be in the 1851 census of Tickencote shown as a Servant aged 17. His baptism is on Family Search which shows him to have been baptised at Empingham on 8 December 1833 parents William & Lucy GRANT. Also another baptism to this couple of a daughter Sarah on 8 January 1832. Looks like William could have had several marriages. Burial record of a Lucy GRANT at Empingham on 1 August 1835, aged 24 and daughter Sarah was buried at Empingham on 11 August 1835, aged 3.

Poor William did not have much luck with his wives. There is a burial at Empingham on 16 March 1848 for a Hannah GRANT, aged 31. They all died so painfully young didn't they.

I did look earlier (middle of the night!!) for a marriage between William and Lucy but had no luck.

The Lucy Grant burial is a great find, Janet.

Wow, all this info is great. I agree with most of all your comments, but cannot prove some, one way or the other. I will need to digest this and get with my co-researcher who live in Empingham and in Dubai. Not an easy task always because of the time difference. I will get back to you as I find out more. Thanks again.

I am going to answer your posts individually. I am not certain that the same William married Mary G and Catherine Collins. The info was given to me by others. They were researching Mary Gregory as she was their ancestor. The children for Catherine are correct and in post #6 you mention Mary Ann who was also her daughter. The 1841 census info above would indicate that Charles, John, and Henry were visiting Perhaps to see the new baby.Henry's parents are indeed William and Lucy. Hannah is Hannah Biddle as you show in post #4.

We tend to agree with your idea of a remarriage to Sophia Wright.
