According to his marriage certificate, when Wiliam Henry Sanders married Emily Ann Horrell on 25 Dec 1879 he was a bachelor of full age, a labourer, a resident of Ashton, Devon, and son of John Sanders. There is no entry against his father's occupation. Both witnesses were from the bride's family.

In 1881, 1891 and 1901, his place of birth is recorded as Kingsteignton (Newton Abbot district), Devon. Year of birth 1857/8. It is possible that he died in 1908.

I have not been able to identify record of his birth on Free BMD, nor trace a census entry prior to his marriage. I now have to consider the possibility that this was not his birth name.

I would appreciate any help as I try to establish this man's true identity.

P S. He is not the William Henry Sanders, Jun quarter 1859. Newton Abbot, mmn Ackrell, nor William Henry Warren Sanders, Dec quarter 1857, Newton Abbot.

I have an ancestor who was born to one brother but lived with another from when she was little. She gave the name of the brother that bought her up as her father on her marriage.

I see someone on Family Search has identified Elizabeth Jane, daughter of Richard and Jane (Stevens) Sanders as the mother of William Henry Warren Sanders, and someone on My Heritage shows Emily Ann Horrell as his wife. (Saunders and Sanders used at random).

Would be good to have some supporting evidence. Could explain uncertainty around identity of groom's father in original post.

Richard Sanders married Jane Stevens 13/10/1836 Kingsteignton

They bap 9 children in Kingsteignton - all on FMP with images
    Elizabeth Jane bap 24/9/1837

There is no bap for Sarah Jane (1871 census) plus there is a marriage of
Jane Sanders to John Causley Sept qtr 1868 Newton Abbot 5b 241
1/9/1868 at Woolborough father Richard Sanders and the witnesses William and Louisa Sanders:)
So is this where father John Sanders comes from on William's marriage?
Mary Ellen Causley mmn Sanders birth reg Sept qtr 1869 Plymouth 5b 266
William Thomas Causley mmn Sanders birth reg June qtr 1875 Newton Abbot 5b134
Frank Causley mmn Sanders birth reg Sept qtr 1881 Newton Abbot 5b 126

I cannot find the Causleys in 1881 - have to go out will come back to it later on .

Thanks, Molly May. Don't trouble yourself with the Causleys, unless they help identify the Sanders.

My prime interest is the Sanders/Saunders of Kingsteignton and area. They seem to have been quite a prolific tribe, with limited imagination when it came to naming children, making it difficult to establish relationships. With your help, and that of others, things are beginning to get a little clearer.

    More conjecture:-
There is a bap for William Henry Warren 20/6/1856 at Wolborough St Mary. mother Sarah - address Union House (workhouse?) Newton Abbot.
This ties in with the birth reg June qtr 1856 Newton Abbot 5b 137 no mmn given.
Elizabeth Jane Sanders, is Jane at her marriage to John Causley in Wolborough in 1868 and Sarah Jane on the 1871 census.
So is Sarah Warren, Elizabeth Jane Sanders?
I wish I could find her in 1861:headbang:
