In my partner's Tree I have
    William John Percival Ashcroft
BIRTH 9 FEB 1834,Tower Hamlets, Stepney, London, England
DEATH 18 MAY 1882, Leyton, Greater London/Essex, England from burial record in FamilySearch - no death in BMD or GRO that I can find.

He was married to Sarah Frances Jarrett (FANNY) 6 Oct 1857 at St Dunstan and All Saints Church, Stepney, London, England. Four children resulted, two boys who died young and 2 girls who survived, Catherine Alice/KATE and Florence. He seemed to disappear before the 1881 Census as Fanny is claiming to be Mrs Harry Sloane at that time. She went ahead and married Harry on 26 Aug 1883 at Church of St James the Great, Bethnal Green, London, England; BMD V1c p402.

What happened to WJP Ashcroft? I was alerted to the fact that several Ashcrofts were executed for murder in Lancaster around this time and wondered if he was part of that family. However I can't find a link- maybe it's in a newspaper? I am assuming the FamilySeaarch burial record is correct (familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QL25-MLGN) as it has his full name but how did that come about without an official Death record?

    Puzzled in Adelaide.

I found a family of Ashcrofts, James Snr, James Jnr, David and William Holden executed in Lancaster for 'The Pendleton Murders' but that was in 1817. Then in 1827 Samuel Ashcroft.

He seems not to be around on the 1871 as well.
Fanny Ashcroft is living with her parents William Jarrett 63, wife Sarah, Henry 24. Fanny is 32 and also Kate Ashcroft, Grandaughter born 1865

As for Florence, there is a 3 three year old Florence Ashcroft living with Frederick Mouteney and family in High Street Harrow and is noted as his granddaughter.

Fanny is good at telling porkies. She is on the 1881 census as age 33 (1848) with 14 year old Catherine and 7 year old Florence. She was married to William in 1857 so she married him when she was 9!!!!

In June qtr 1863 there is a birth registration of a Frances Sarah Ashcroft at Stepney.
William John Percival Ashcroft was born to Henry and Mary Ann Ashcroft.
1871 census we find Fanny with her parents and daughter Kate in post #6.
1871 census also has Henry Ashcroft 73, cooper, wife Mary Ann 66, son George 32 and a granddaughter, Frances aged 8 years. Is this another child of Fanny and William's or the daughter of George? With the same name of Frances Sarah I believe her be Fanny's. 5 GBC/1871/1634/0076

In the 1861 census he was transcribed as William H Ashcroft, but it definitely says William J P Ashcroft, he is a Clerk at London Docks.

Excellent Sis. So we have another daughter and I can rule out Frances Mounteney.
So who is Florence's father. William or Harry?

I've even tried a search on FMP of all census using the address from the 1861 census, but the name Ashcroft only comes up there in the 1861 census. The address doesn't come up at all for the 1871 census.

There is a Florence E J Ashcroft, St Olave March 1873 but she is the only one I’ve found and fits the age of 7 on the 1881
