Born in Skerlaugh, Yorkshire abt 1838 -- this information from his admissions to Dreadnought Seamen's Hospital in Greenwich, London -- he was a ship's steward

I have him in Whitechapel in 1881
He died in the Dreadnought hospital 24 Aug 1889

He was the first husband of Clara Emily Jones, after his death she became the second wife of my cousin Robert Heath, marrying on 10 Sep 1890 in Churt, Surrey

William and Clara had married 25 Apr 1866 Bermondsey St James, he claimed his father was George. Indeed there is an (I am assuming) adult baptism in Hull Holy Trinity on 24 Mar 1857 for William Tindall Lundy, this names parents as George and Jane.

I have been looking in Skirlaugh in 1841, and there are a few Lundys about, but no sign of a George. Nor an obvious candidate for William

... There is, however, a Tindall Lundy c1838, and a baptism naming his mother as Jane Lundy, no father.

So I am wondering if Tindall didn't just add William to his name when he left home, invented a father and got himself baptised again ... ?

I feel emboldened in this decision, by a note on an ancestry tree saying Tindall disappears after 1851 ---- I think I may have found him. What do you think?

GRO Index has no mother's maiden name for Tindell Lundy
GRO Reference: 1838 M Quarter in SKIRLAUGH Volume 22 Page 499it looks like it might be the same chap. Have you found him in 1851?

Ummm, I've only found one marriage for William T Lundy, and one death for William Tyndall Lundy, and no births on FreeReg

There are a couple Tindall Lundys around, after mine, but at least one before

I should have explained. William Tindall births around 1838. Perhaps Mum married a Lundy after he was born..haven’t checked for maiden names.
And then he got baptised later to take the Lundy name.

Oh I see. Interesting twisty theory ;)

But the available evidence points to his birthplace being Skirlaugh; there's just that baptism in Hull when he is 20/21 ...

Did you know there's a William Tyndall Lundy on deaceasedonline, buried 30 Aug, 1889. It says 'grave details and 7 other burials', though it could be that no one in the grave is actually connected. I would oblige, but have run out of credits.:)

I’m inclined to think that he was the Tindall Lundy registered in 1838 born to Jane Lundy, single woman. He probably did add the William and a father George when he was baptised again, perhaps to cover up his illigitamacy.
There is a Jane Lundy father Robert mother Alanthea baptised in Skirlaugh on 4 June 1818.

I did find a merchant seaman's record mid 1850s for a William Lundy, but it didn't give a lot of information it said this one was born in Lincolnshire so not yours probably. I will have a further ferret for that sort of info.

I did find three Dreadnought records, two for admissions and the third with the admission and death. Have you got those? All admissions were for brochitis and the last with pnumonia

Ah just read your first post to see you do have all of the admissions.

Do you have them in 1881? Clara seems to be a servant and possibly William living separately as destitute. I wont give the references as you probably have them. Let me know if you want them.

Thank you, yes I have all those :)
I can't find him on any other census though, and presume he was at sea

Poor William :(, suffered terribly with his lungs, at least he could go to the Seamen's Hospital, I expect many others would have been glad of the chance

Dreadnought was set up specially for seamen it was transferred to Guy's St Thomas' Hospital from Greenwich and seamen and their families can still be referred. Fascinating story. Hope your sleuthing turns out to be sound. It all fits. :)
