May I once again ask for help here with a family 'Smith' ? First found when nosing around in doings of 2cx2r b.26 Jan. 1891 in Eastbourne Sussex. He had no wife, so thought to help him out there. 1939 has him residing in Hailsham, an upholsterer & Mattress maker. Arthur D.(David) Hollebon. wife Lilian .b.24 Aug.1892 maiden name 'Smith' - from 1914 marriage Eastbourne Sussex. Civil so also unhelpful. Next door is a Clement Smith b.1888 & Ada Smith b. 1900 [nee Langridge]married 1925 Eastbourne tna_r39_2554_2554a_007 .......... Probate 1949 Brighton has Hubby Arthur E. Hollebon & dtr Doris Lilian now 'Girling' as executors. Arthur E. Probate 1961-12 May Lewes has Sidney Arthur Hollebon & Lilian Doris Girling as executors. Birth for Sidney A. seen at Wycombe 1916 but have no proof it's him. I've been all over the GRO & FreeBMD trying to fathom who her parents were. Did she tell truth about birth year? Any help at all so very much appreciated. This post begun at approx. 14.30 normal interruptions followed. Dinner hour also.
The 1921 Census has the couple living at 1 Sackville Road, Hailsham, Sussex, where it states that Arthur was manager of a Furniture Stores. Lilian's place of birth is recorded as being Colchester, Essex and their 5-year-old son Sidney's is recorded as being High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. This latter ties in with the birth that you found in 1916 @Ma-dotcom
There is a birth registration for a Lilian SMITH in the December quarter of 1892 in Colchester RD, volume 4a, page 547. Mother's maiden name is COLBORNE There are 3 other Lilian SMITH registrations in the area (1890 and 1894) but they show a middle name, which yours doesn't, so I reckon that it could be a safe bet.
Brilliant Jan, thank you so much. I've just looked at Sidney as Arthur S in 1939 with wife Doris E. nee Smith. Married 7 Sep. 1939 Thorntton Heath, Surrey. Like I needed another one. Matters not what mumma was doing in Wycombe the lad seems the real deal. I just knew my problems would soon dissipate if I stopped b here. Name Lilian Smith Age in 1911 18 Estimated Birth Year abt 1893 Relation to Head Servant Gender Female Birth Place Colchester, Essex Civil parish Eastbourne County/Island Sussex Home of Mr & Mrs Thomas Weedon [or Wardon]. Nicely placed for a meet & marry in Eastbourne 1914. Followed up with a Baptism:- Lilian Smith Baptism Date 6 Nov 1892 Baptism Place Colchester, Christ Church With St Mary-At-The-Walls, Essex, England Father -Sidney Robert Smith Mother -Lizzie Smith ...who were duly married in Southampton Marriages Sep 1890 SMITH Sidney Robert + COLBORNE Lizzie —Southampton 2c-75 ---------------- I'd still be looking if not for the help of our Jan, & 1921 which I completely forgot about Now I guess I should look up the newer miss Doris Edith Smith - Hollebon.
