*Henry Leonard bachelor, sergeant RA, Rangoon, married Aliza Ann Bell (she signs Eliza) 20/9/1911 Christ Church Bengal
He names his father as William Leonard deceased

No sign of Henry Leonard, who died a few weeks after the census was taken

The 1939 register shows Eva (b 8/8/1889) and Augustus (b 4/10/1887) in Leyton.
Augustus is a retired police officer
Audrey and Augustus are with them, and so is Leonard Henry who is a professional footballer;)

The birth of Henry Webb mmn Brooks has been bothering me.

Could this be the right birth reg for Henry, although it does make the age of 4 in 1891 census, way out. Just checked the original, and it looks more like age 6 not 4.

Henry Leonard mmn Barrett Dec qtr 1884 Linton 3b 519.

So it looks like Henry was the son of Sarah and her husband William Leonard
(married 1882), as for Eva ??

I think that this might all be coincidence as there is also a birth registration for Henry LEONARD in Linton with the MMN of BARRETT:
    upload_2022-8-3_7-27-47.png

This is a different branch (yes, they are also in my tree... :headbang:) and William and Sarah had married on 28th October 1882 in Castle Camps.

The Castle Camps mob were famous for using the same names as those for the offspring of their siblings/cousins/family down the road. For instance, in CC alone, I have 5 chaps by the name of William LEONARD born in CC in the 3 years from 1862-1865.

Back to the drawing board for the WEBB family, I am afraid, but a HUGE thank you for the information about the LEONARDs - you have solved another mystery before I could voice it! :D

I can't find any professional footballer by the name of Leonard Henry Williams, either in the papers or on-line. I thought I'd found him, a Len Williams who played for several clubs, including Charlton, which would have given him a London connection - but I've managed to track down this chaps origins and he was Welsh.......:sceptical:

I think that William, Sarah, Henry and Eva are the LEONARD's that @MollyMay found. This William's father was Henry LEONARD (bap 1826 to William and Charlotte at Castle Camps). Henry married Elizabeth WEBB (bap 1830 to Thomas and Marianne at Little Thurlow, Suffolk) on 23 June 1850, Castle Camps.

William's birth was registered as William Willie LEONARD mmn WEBB in the June quarter of 1861, Linton Reg. District. Willie Leonard was baptised on 14 July 1861, Castle Camps to Henry and Elizabeth.

Elizabeth died and was buried on 16 Jan 1862 at All Saints, Castle Camps.

Henry then married Priscilla BELSHAM on 2 Jan 1863, Castle Camps.

William (b. 1861) is not with Henry and Priscilla in 1871, but I think he is the William LEONARD, aged 9, born Castle Camps and listed as a son to William and Charlotte LEONARD at RG10/1592/133/10

There is a William LEONARD b. 1862, Castle Camps, an Ostler (Inn Serv.) at the Three Hills Public House, Great Barlow, Linton on the 1881 census - RG11/1672/100/5, which I think is him.

William LEONARD married Sarah BARRETT on 28 Oct 1882 at Castle Camps. William's father is listed as Henry, a shoemaker (Henry is a shoemaker on the various census, as was his father).

Why this William is listed as WEBB on the 1891 census, I don't know - the only connection I can find to the surname Webb, is that it was his grandmother's maiden name - but his death was registered as both William WEBB (as per the death registration @MollyMay found in post #16) and William LEONARD with the same age (29), Vol. Page and Reg District.

One last thing is that Eva Miriam LEONARD's baptism (from FMP transcriptons - my sub to SEAX has expired) to parents William, an Ostler and Sarah on 25 Sep 1889, Essex gives their abode as 46 Station Street, the same as on the 1891 census.

None of the above helps with finding your William Mascall/Webb but I think it confirms he is not the one in 1891 married to Sarah and with children Henry and Eva M - though they could well be part of your tree  :)

Do I need to run and hide as your William appears to be doing?

I do have a sub and the only other piece of information on the baptism is the DOB, given as 8th August 1889. I'll e-mail you Jan ;)
