I have an idea what it might be but I'm very undecided.

Here is the entry image larger.

I thought Annie at first but the noticed the second letter had a tail, though somewhat faint. Ancestry has quite a few of the Randott surname, but now Annie or Agnes.

Which parish register is it @Findem ?

Well I have had another long look and I cannot see another case when the writer has put a line through a ll. Also I cannot find another Agnes anywhere so obviously not a popular name.

I would love to find out what it really says, just to see how far off I am.

Hi,
Sorry for not mentioning the parish, it's St Mary the Virgin, Ware, Hertfordshire the image is from the Ware "Composite" PRs on FMP, on page 94, there are 99 pages in the Composite PRs.

Wendy, I only intended posting the once so I'm not sure how it ended up as two topics, they are both the same topic, sorry about that, it's weird., I'll ask the mods to combine them.

Not wishing to muddy the water but I did notice around that time the name Agnes did pop up a few times but usually clear enough to decipher I can't recall seeing the name as spelled Agnis but as I was concentrating mainly on surnames there may have been one or more spelled that way.

Don't think the bride's name starts with "G" - compare with the "G" in Galloway - so started looking for alternatives. "R", "Z", "K" (remotely like), "Q" (but no following "u"), even "L", all stand up for consideration. The rest of the name does definitely look like "-andott".

I agree with Agnis as the first name even though the vicar/cleric/gentleman has added a squiggle to the "n" that doesn't appear in either John or the surname we're chasing.

Will definitely be checking back to see if there's a final solution!!

Good luck, Derek. ;)

On the next page under the date of Feb 7 1633 and next under the name of Richard Clarke (Feb 4) The writing is the same or seems so as the person who wrote the name we are looking at. The first letters of both first and surnames are the same as that in ?andott. It looks like Richard to me.

When you search on Ancestry using *andott the following come up.

Landott
Candott
Sandott
Bandott
Mandott
Jandott
Handott

But none in Hertfordshire!

I think we are right with Randott.

If you put the name into FMP's search all records (I did year of birth 1600 +/- 40 years, Hertfordshire) you get
the burial of Jeremye Randott 1634 Hunsdon and
the marriage of Anne Rantott 1668 in Elstree
but just these two instances of the name,
without Hertfordshire just
Roger Randett in Flintshire

To start with, I'm sure the groom's surname is HALLOWAY (and my wife also said that straight off without any prompting or suggestions from me).

I think the bride's name is Agnis RANDOLL.

It's a bit hard to be definitive with this page because so many different people have written on it, but have a look at these entries for the comparisons I made:
9 Sep 1629 - GALLAWAY (initial letter is very different from here)
21 Sep 1629 - HILLARY - note the "ll" is crossed
7 Jul 1630 - Hester (note initial H again)

I am sure they are 2 t's at the end of her surname There is a Marriott and a Mills above their names... the 2 t's in Marriott are crossed... the l"s in Mills are not.
