Mary Ann PAYNE was born in about 1833/1834 in East Grinstead, Sussex. I have her in every census from 1841 up to and including 1901 and from 1861 to 1901 she was living in Eastbourne.

She married Caleb GOLDSMITH on 13th April 1857 at Eastbourne Parish Church and his occupation was that of Gardener or Greengrocer/assistant throughout the censuses.

Caleb died on 1st November 1905 and is buried at Ocklynge Cemetery, on the outskirts of Hastings. He shares his grave with 2 complete strangers but there is no sign of Mary.

I have not been able to find Mary’s death registration – there are so many GOLDSMITHs in Sussex - so if she moved away I do not stand a chance of finding her.

I have no idea as to whether or not she was still alive when Caleb died, but newspapers might throw some light on this – a funeral notice or obituary perhaps.

If anyone is able to throw some light on Mary’s whereabouts, I would be most grateful.

Thank you.

I know this isn't what you asked for but is he any relation to Caleb Goldsmith, Eastbourne, Sussex, dairyman?

Hello Jan

Have you investigated Mary A. Goldsmith died December Quarter 1916 in Hastings RD aged 84 [vol. 2B page 35]? It appears to be the only relevant death south of Epsom over a 20 year period.

In previous searches (some time back) I had not come across her. You do realise that I am going to have to order that certificate, don't you? Okay. Will do and, when it arrives, will come back to tell you.

I'm good at that -spending other peoples' money for them!

Unless you are referring to the 1861 census where my chap was recorded as being aged 28 and a Greengrocer & Dairyman, no. But thanks for checking.

There are a few mentions of a Caleb Goldsmith (as above post #2) in the British Newspaper Archives.

According to the National Burial Index on FMP Mary Ann Goldsmith (age 84) was buried on 10 Dec 1916 at Christ Church, Blacklands, Hastings.

Oh wow! Thank you! If it turns out to be my great, great grandmother, I can see a possible trip to the seaside looming!

Drat! Not my Mary Ann GOLDSMITH. :(

The certificate arrived today and it was for Mary Ann GOLDSMITH who was a spinster and formerly a tobacconist. The death was registered by her nephew, J A GOLDSMITH who is not one of mine either.

She could have moved to the other end of the country for all that I know, so her death may remain as one of life's little mysteries. Annoying, though.

Thanks for trying.

Ho, hum.... back to the drawing board.....

Sorry Jan, mixed myself up with dates in later replies.
I too have problems with E.Grinstead people (alleged).

I found a relly who as 72 left London & took herself & two daughters off to New Zealand where they lived out the remainder of their lives.

Being you reminded us about this lady.....
Have you looked to see if she emigrated? I have a gr. grandmother that was 80 when she arrived in Canada. Searched forever to find out what happened to her in England and then when I checked my gr. aunt's family and started searching because I couldn't find them in London in 1911, here I found out they had come to Vancouver and she came with them.:)

Now, that is something that had not occurred to me. Although I suspect that mention would have been made in the family (who all stayed in England) as it would have been quite a big something to have happened.

(I should have said my gr. gr. grandmother ) My mother never mentioned those relatives that were in Vancouver, and she grew up there. She was born after her gr. gran had passed away, but the rest of the family was still there. You never know, she may not have known them...families kept to themselves a lot.

Jan, any chance this is also your Mary Ann in 1911?

Mary Goldsmith 73 abt 1838 East Grinstead, Sussex -Widowed
Inmate Eastbourne Union Workhouse & Infirmary Eastbourne.
RG14; Piece: 4849.

If not it
certainly held some names of interest to me.:)

Loved the piece in 1871 census where Frances Philip 'Goldsmith' 23 indexed as 'son', is then corrected by some one as "not related just sleeping in the shed."
