Marriage between Thomas Clifford and Elizabeth Bailey.

What does the ? say (I have an opinion but would like another, or two) and what does it mean. I have looked at other pages and entries and they have the normal 'Banns' or 'Licence' entered, it looks like the curate Anthony Freeman only officiated on a few marriages though:(

Thank you.

That is exactly what I thought, but it just seemed strange to me, that this marriage is the only one with that phrase used all the rest just have 'Banns' entered.

I'm with Daft Bat but I've just gone into Ancestry and the image for that marriage has disappeared (you haven't nicked it have you MollyMay?:)).

However, also without an image is another entry in the 'Gloucestershire, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1813' which is for the marriage of Thomas Clifford and Betty Bailey. The date is 12 Oct 1766. I thought that was a bit odd but it probably refers to the Banns as that October 12th was a Sunday.

No:p, if you can access the image (at the moment I cannot access any of the Oxfordshire ones, just get the sorry message:mad:) there is a paper over the page, but if you advance one more page the image is there.

I've now managed to access this image and it says that Thomas Clifford and Betty Baily (sic) were married by Banns on October 12th 1766. As this looks like a later inserted entry in the register, I suspect the person who entered it wrote down the wrong date.

At the bottom of the page there is an entry for the baptism of their son Thomas on October 18th 1767 and the burial of a Thomas Clifford on November 15th the same year.

I know I should really get out more, but I thought it worth looking in the OED and it must be possible that he meant "According to or in accordance with a rule or set of regulations; (hence) in a proper or formally correct manner."

Looking again at the entry I wonder if it does mean that because the words "regularly published" appear to be a later addition to the entry.

Not at all Flook, I could have just read it and left it as it fairly obvious what the meaning is (although I doubted myself:rolleyes:) but I was curious why the curate went to such lengths when he just put Banns against the others he officiated.
I will check out the other entry - thanks for that.
The sad thing is I am pretty certain he is nothing to do with my line, but as someone has him as brother to my ellusive George Clifford b1745c (where I do not know), I thought I had better check it out.
