Approximate date of family gathering?

Bay Horse

Can be a bit of a dark horse
This is one from my aunt's album. The family are unidentified, as yet.

Does anyone have any idea as to the age of this one, given the clothing?
There's a very old pram in there, too.

Thank you, ladies.

Supposing this was taken c.1922. Might the three girls present be aged 17, 12 and 20, viewed left to right, and might the chap in the flat cap be the one in my avatar? o_O The lady with the umbrella 'might' be my grandmother.

Other snaps from the album are easy to identify because I recognise the background. This looks as though someone has suggested a family walk somewhere with the pram, and Nan has taken no chances with the weather - big hat, brolly, mackintosh!

I don’t know as to whether those girls fit those ages, I would have thought they were slightly younger. However, the photo isn’t really clear enough to make a better guess - who would have been in the pram?

My uncle, born 1922. Dad wasn't born until much later.

My feeling is that they are/were younger. I can't find another family that it could conceivably be, with the three girls.

There was a little boy born 1916... he died of scarlet fever as a toddler. Also, if it was 1916, my grandfather was away fighting.

The photo is not only faint, it is tiny. :(

Looking at it long and hard, those girls could be the ages you reckon - it is so hard to judge people's ages from these old photos. I have some pictures of my mum and her sisters where they look so much younger than they really were. I think your first thought was a good one :)

He does look suspiciously like your avatar.
Can you clean and sharpen up the photo.
I have a tiny little one of a wedding (my media) that is about 3 inches long. My son sharpened it right up for me. I can’t do it (of course) but it is quite clear now.

May I stick my oar in?

To me, this is a photo of a young-ish couple with their mother/mother-in-law & 3 children - 2 girls & a baby.

Or perhaps a young-ish couple with their first baby, with mother/mother-in-law & HER daughters.

The 2 girls are in mop-caps; the eldest looks much younger than 17.
The baby's parents, particularly the mother in adult dress (with hat), could be in their 30's ...

The trouble with photos is that we see what we want to see - this could be a friend sending a picture of THEIR family ...

Sorry BH

Jane

Yes, the thought had occurred to me that it could be someone else.

If it's my grandmother, she'd be in her forties in this. It's the build of my grandmother. My dad's eldest sister was twenty-three when he was born, so a huge range in the children's ages. By the time the eldest married and had a baby, the two other sisters were adult.

Jane is right; girl on the left is much younger than 17. If it's who I think it is... and I need to sift through the photos and find that child again to compare, she was married within twelve months... that puts it into perspective somewhat, so this can't be 1922. Hmm. I'm stuck. :sceptical:

Looking at fashions on the Interwebby, the style of dress in the photo could be earlier than the 1920's. If it was taken in, say, 1918, then everyone would be 4 years younger, so the girls could be about 13, 8 and 16 - does that make sense? The only problem then would be who was in the pram - and it would make the man and the lady with the umbrella 4 years younger too........I think I'll admit defeat :(

The little lad (my uncle) who succumbed to scarlet fever was born September 1916. Could it be him?

The 13 year old is probably the clearest visually of the whole bunch, and it does look like her.

Ish.

If you think your avatar and the lovely man with the pram is the same man and the little baby is the one born in 1916 then when did Dad enlist?
Would he have been away at war or did he enlist later?

Exactly one year later!... a small update, and closure.

We were spot-on in the end. I was given a good, clear photo of my grandfather recently where he was dressed identically to the man in the picture above. I think the two photographs may even have been taken on the same day.

It would be late 1916/early 1917 - not 1922 as I first thought. The baby in the pram was my uncle, who died of scarlet fever.

Taid (grandfather) did serve in WWI so this may have been taken when he was home on leave. Perhaps that was the reason for arranging a family photoshoot on a day when the weather wasn't really fit for taking pictures.

:)
