Hello from Devon, England

Hi everyone :)

What a great looking forum this is, and from reading some of the responses to other newbie posts, seems to be filled with lovely people too. I'm glad to have joined!

My ancestors were predominantly from three counties: Kent, Hampshire & Berkshire though I've recently discovered some came over from Ireland way back when. I haven't a clue how to even begin researching that but hopefully I'll get some handy tips on here.

I first got into genealogy as a way of leaving some family history for my eldest daughter. A month later she admitted she's not particularly interested, but by then I'd seen my first Census and was hooked! :D

I'm off to London in a couple of weeks, cemetery searching (as you do!), and am planning on visiting the National Archives in Kew. If anyone would like anything looking up I can pre-order another 10 documents. Let me know, I'm happy to help.

Tata for now

Hello MoK and a warm welcome!

Everyone here is very friendly and the most helpful bunch of folk you will ever meet. :)

Have a good rummage round, post your questions and we will do our best to point you in the right direction.

Most of all...... have fun! :Dl

Hello Maid (I know Steve has already said that, but us Devonians have to stick together :)) and welcome to Top Dog. My roots are in Devon, but I lived just ouside London for many years - and spent many a happy (sometimes frustrating) day at Kew. And everyone here loves a trip to a cemetery  Which ones are on your itinerary?

Hello Maid
welcome I don't live in Devon but have ancestors from there.
your daughter will be interested as she gets older and then she will be glad you have researched most of us bemoan the fact we never asked questions before it was to late and no one was left to ask.

Howdy, Maid (gotta do the American greeting). :D Lovely to have you here. I envy you your trip to Kew. I hope you find everything you are searching for there as well as here. BTW - love your avatar. It is very pretty! :)

Welcome in Maid, I don't live there either but a cousin does. [Ottery] I was once asked if I had any relatives form Devon & replied "no". Little did I know what discoveries lay ahead.

SandieP has said, your daughter may find an interest later depending on who asks her what questions -or school studies. If not, don't despair- there may be grand children one day.

Thanks AnnB :) Paddington Old and Croydon Cemeteries are the ones I'm visiting this trip. It'll be a full on couple of days but worth it!

Thanks Sandiep :) I'm hoping she will be and then tell stories about them to any kids she may have. Oh to have a time machine eh :)
