Confused dates

I have just uploaded Memorial 199788916 to Find a Grave. This is for Ann Chapman who died 19th November 1784; her husband was Richard Chapman.

[1] Can anyone please read the last word of line 2 on the memorial which starts Body of Ann Chapman, then it looks like male with an 'l' in front. The next line continues 'ye wife' so I thought it was late wife but isn't.

[2] Why do Ancestry and Familysearch say she was buried on 13th November 1784? No doubt either the stone mason or someone else (later record transacriber) made an error.

It does look as you say Colin. Could the engraver made an error? I thought it read " & wife" which leaves the other word still wanting. If it were modern I'd think "mate"& Wife of"

Oh, just read your post again and you don't think it does. However, I can't see "ye" before the word wife.

Likewise FMP - 3 entries for this burial and all say 13th November, including the National Burial Index, but none have a copy pf the original Parish Register to check
Anc. have used the FS record for their entry as they quote the film number.

Just checked the etymology and apparently, the word 'mate' has been used since the 1540s to mean 'one of a wedded pair'.

So, perhaps it is.

Certainly there with 'e' above 'y' just before Wife (granted it is faint though).

When you post a comment on the thread look to the bottom of the box you type in then select Upload a file. Select browse then go to the file of the image on your pc.

If you get an error it is probably because the file size is too large. Resize the image to a smaller size and try again.
