Do you think this surname is Petter or Potter

According to Ancestry's Essex Parish Register Index the baptism is of William Petter baptised 21 Feb 1626 at Kelvedon Hatch, the father is named as Rose. It's the third from last of the 1626 entries on the second page.

I have looked at the writer's e and o and unfortunately some look the same, to me anyway.

Checked out the word filius where I could read it, initially I thought it was just a sloppy way the writer finished off his 'a', however looking at one or two female entries it does seem as the he finished off his 'a' fully. I can't image anyone would name a guy Rose, surely?

The surname ends with the same letter as 'baptizatus' and 'filius', so I'm thinking it's Pettis.

My Dad had a male cousin who had a middle name of Rose. I always figured it was a Scottish thing from his mother's side. I'll ask his daughter where it came from.

I've been told like you, with the Scots a middle name was from the mother's maiden name or occasionally a clan name.

I did notice a few Rose Potters when researching my lot but until William and Mary came along it wasn't a name I recorded, I'll have to, just out of interest, go back and see where it leads me.

Ah that's shone a new light on it, I couldn't make out the bit on the end, in fact I'll start again on the whole entry given the ideas on here.

Just had a quick squiz and the 'gen ' is so clear, I guess I saw the g as y and thought it y, short for Ye.

As for the father's first name I now think it is more likely Rafe than Rofe for Rose.

Having blown it up much larger than before I think the last letter of the father's surname is 's' so the surname is I think more like Pettis as Arthur stated.

At least I got the name William right.
