Robinson

Bay Horse

Can be a bit of a dark horse
For a few years I've been searching for Elizabeth Robinson, who had ties with the towns of Hope and Mold in Flintshire.

Just looking through my notes and I have an Elizabeth Robinson working as a parlour maid to George Leverson at Leeswood Hall, Flintshire, on the 1911 census. She was born 1875 in Altrincham, Cheshire - which is possibly the right age - but there I stalled.

Is anyone able to find this lady anywhere else, please? It's all rather vague, I know. Any leads gratefully received.

How about 1881 RG11/3505/4/1 Baguley, Altrincham, Maple Road
John and Sarah Brownhill, sister in law Martha Robinson and niece Elizabeth Robinson aged 6, born Northwich?

Thanks, Ann. Coincidentally, I am just looking at that. Robinson is a common name around those parts but there is a good chance that it links to the parlour maid in 1911.

This lady was involved in an inquest in 1924/5. Am I right in thinking that Welsh papers are only digitised up to 1919?

No, there are plenty of Welsh papers on the BNA after that date. The Welsh newspapers on the National Library of Wales site only go up to 1919. Do you want me to have a rootle?

There is a Family Tree on Ancestry which shows that an Elizabeth ROBINSON born c1875 at Northwich married an Edward Smith GITTINS and they had their first child James Edward Robinson GITTINS c1894 in Northwich (although it looks as if their marriage did not take place until 1895 according to the GRO), which may cast doubt on the 1881 Baguley census Elizabeth ROBINSON as being your Elizabeth ROBINSON.

Perhaps a possibility is a baptism at St George Altrincham on 10 January 1872 for an Elizabeth ROBINSON daughter of Robert ROBINSON & Mary (transcript on Ancestry). 1881 census of Altrincham shows Robert & Mary ROBINSON living at 12 John Street, he being shown as a Domestic Servant Gardener born Pontefract, together with various children and his mother in law but no daughter Elizabeth. However, I have found an Elizabeth ROBINSON registered in the September qtr 1874 at Altrincham, no mother's maiden name shown. So could this be your Elizabeth ROBINSON? Not that I am having any success in finding her in the 1881/1891 & 1901 census records. Will keep searching though.

It seem a quite a common name in most places there's more than a fair share in Essex, I hope you never have to search for a William Robinson, well, having done my best to spread doom and gloom I'll retreat.

I was thinking more 'Robinson's Brewery' @Findem :) But yes, you're right... I've been trawling through the death index for possible Elizabeth Robinsons and am just overwhelmed by them all. As I say, I've closed the door on this many times.

The ER working as a parlour maid could be a red herring. She is in the right area and there is a family link to that property, but as Derek points out, there are a lot of them. It's also been suggested (Ann) that Robinson could have been a married name, which is something I'd considered before.

@Ann, I need to find the inquest info. From my notes at the time, he was last seen alive by Elizabeth on Hope Mountain (which is also a local beauty spot, but her statement said that she'd caught the Wrexham bus as far as Hope late at night earlier that week after being with him, which suggests she lived there). Will so some digging around in cupboards and check that I've recorded the info correctly.
