A few words need deciphering please

Hope you can help with this one, Ancestry titled it as "Theobald Orabeggar baptised 8 Jan 1608 at Wicken Bohunt, Essex".

My take of it is: The child of a beggar born in the house of ? Thorrowgood was baptised by ye name of Dorkeas? ye ? after ye ? being ye 8 dai Januarie 1608, Jacobi 5th or sixth.

Not too sure of the dates that the James ruled but the entry could be 5th or 6th.

Once it's been sorted I will add a correction note in Ancestry.

I was allowing myself to go off track when I noticed during my research of Battle families, Theobald Joslin married John Battle 28 Nov 1667 at Roxwell, John is not an ancestor but I believe will be found to be closely related.

I found the result in question by checking people with the first name of Theobald 1530 to 1800 Essex on Ancestry. I found four others with that first name, 2 Battles, 1 Joslin and 1 Coleman all Battle related but unfortunately not the Theobald Joslin who married John Battle.

It's the third entry on the first page.

Didn't take that one in properly, I think from Barbara's entry his name is John.

I wonder why there is no surname for Dorkeas, I would have thought the beggar had and knew her surname.

Me either...but I think the last letter is ‘h’. Looks quite the same as other ‘h’s’

I think it is 'twelfth' although there seems to be a u or n instead of the f. Possibly Twelfth Night, ie Epiphany on the 6th January?

Thank you all for your help it's good to see it solved.

Not a good start in life for that baby but what struck me was the kindness of John Thorowgood in letting the woman have the baby in his house, the temperature in January in England wouldn't have been good to have a baby born out of doors.

I have seen baptism entries noting the baby was born in a ditch, not any of my lot I'm glad to say.

Now you mention it I can see the baby's name as Wickea. Should the baby reach adulthood and marry, the baptism should be traceable if Ancestry updates the entry but whoever might have her in their tree won't be able to find either parent, unless there is a fuller mention in the church records,

No parent names ,or sex and surname of the baby were given in the entry.

The entry in Ancestry was incorrectly named as "Theobald Orabeggar".

I read the baby's name as Wicken, not Wickea!
