William MASCALL was born about 1864 in Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire and baptised that year on 5th June to John Webb MASCALL and Phoebe née DAY.

He appears in the 1871 census with his family living in Castle Camps (piece 1592, folio 119, page 7) under the surname WEBB. John Webb MASCALL did this from time to time – used his middle name.... :headbang:

In 1881, William is a Farm Servant (Indoor) at Flaxton on the Moor, Yorkshire (piece 4730, folio 25, page 2) with the surname of MASCELL. I have no idea how he wound up there... o_O

However, after that, he disappears into the ether.

All help with finding him is much appreciated. :)

Could he possibly be the William Webb, a horsekeeper born in Castle Camps, aged 27, to be found at 43 Station Street, West Ham in 1891, now married to Sarah with son Henry and daughter Eva M.? RG12/1311/61/18

Just checked the birth registration and it could well be him as his birth was registered with the surname WEBB although baptised as MASCALL :headbang:

You may just have broken down a wall... :D

(This branch of my family drive me nuts! :sceptical:)

You may just have broken down a wall... :D
And you have! :D

I will explain....

John Webb MASCALL(1) was born about 1811 to Sarah MASCALL and John WEBB, who never married.

He had a son John Webb MASCALL(2) in 1833, who married first Eliza BARLTROP (1832-1854) in 1853 and then Phoebe DAY in 1855.

JWM(2) and Phoebe had Emma in 1856 and Sarah in 1858. These were registered with the surname MASCALL. The next 3 children had their births registered under the surname of WEBB. However, by the mid 1870s they were back to using MASCALL again.

Why?

Well, Sarah MASCALL died in 1857 and it was after this that JWM(1) started using the surname of WEBB, after his father, so JWM(2) followed suit.

JWM(1) died in 1873 and so JWM(2) reverted to using MASCALL, his official surname, again.

Aaaargh! :headbang:

However, at least I have timelines (sort of) for checking the right surname now. ;)

I'll budge up, then.... ;)
I don't need much room, I'm only little :D

I've tried and failed at finding anything in the papers, but I think this must be one of your Johns......
Cambridge Independent Press 20th March 1852
Linton
John Adams, of Castle Camps, was charged by John Mascall, of the same place, with assaulting him on the 3rd inst. This was one of those cases of such frequent occurrence which arise at beer-houses, where the flights of fancy, produced by partaking too freely of John Barleycorn, cause disputes to arise which generally end in threats, if not, as on the present occasion, in an attempt to "clip the wings" of the parties who, in the opinion of some of their companions, are soaring too high. - Committed for 21 days hard labour, in default of paying a fine and expenses of £1.

They don't write 'em like that any more

Yes, I am resurrecting this lot again! :D

In post #2 above, @AnnB very kindly discovered this:

Could he possibly be the William Webb, a horsekeeper born in Castle Camps, aged 27, to be found at 43 Station Street, West Ham in 1891, now married to Sarah with son Henry and daughter Eva M.? RG12/1311/61/18

However, I can find no further trace of William, Phoebe or the children. :headbang:

I have found that the son, Henry William's birth was registered in the Linton District (which covers Castle Camps) and where I obtained Sarah’s surname of BROOKS.

However, I can find no marriage for Sarah and William.

I can find no birth registration for Eva, either. :(

If anyone is able to help with the missing information, I would be very grateful. ():-)

Are you ready for this?:nailbiting::eek:

There is this birth reg for Eva M Leonard
upload_2022-8-2_13-14-58.png
no sign of the name Brooks, but...
1901 census 27, Western Street, West Ham RG13/1565/127/19
We have Arthur Willis - carman b1869 Chelmsford
wife Sarah b1865 Cambridgeshire Castle Camps (Sarah Webb b1866 Castle Camps in 1899)
Stepson Henry Leonard b Cambridgeshire Castle Camps
Step daughter Eva b1888 Stratford
plus 4 Willis children all with a mmn of Leonard.

So has Sarah dumped William (or has he died) and she has moved on with Arthur Willis.
Or is it all coincidence?:(

I like that MM :)

I've been concentrating on Phoebe, and found in 1901 in Dursham, Churchfields, Woodford, Essex RG13/1636/104/18 a widowed Phoebe Mascall, a servant, aged 66, a housekeeper, born in Linton, Cambs.

It looks like Sarah Willis died age 39 in 1905 - West Ham 4a 7 Sept qtr
Arthur and the 4 Willis children are together i n 1911.
Eva Miriam Leonard is a cook/general domestic is Snaresbook in 1911

I may cry....

I have the LEONARD and BARRETT families in my tree.... what seems like thousands of the blighters...

The darkened room beckons again....

Thank you both - I will check I my tree connections when I am back on the laptop in the morning.

():-)

There is a burial for a Phoebe Mascall, aged 95, in Manor Park Cemetery (where my grandparents are buried) on the 3rd April 1930 (deceasedonline), her address being given as 2A, South Grove, E3. E3 is Bow, which is only a stone's throw from West Ham, so the family seem to have adopted this area - assuming these are all the right people.....:nailbiting:

Eva Miriam Leonard married Augustus Williams at Harrow Green (Leytonstone) Holy Trinity on the 31st May 1913. Ancestry give her father's name as William Leonard. It's a shame the registers aren't on SEAX, but they are held at the Vestry House Museum in Walthamstow and aren't on-line :(

Henry (Webb) Leonard joined the army.
Attested in Stratford 8/3/1903 - Royal Artillery #15674
On the 1911 census he is in Rangoon, a sergeant cook - a single man
There is his attestation on FMP which give his date of death as 7/7/1921 London of pneumonia.
There look to be records on Anc. too, but I am still without a sub.
