From FS Kingston Jamaican Baptisms - dated 26/2/1814

Amelia Cater and her sister Martha Henry - it says both children of Charlotte Arnott by
J Cater fr 2nd.

What does the fr 2nd mean?

I have left more of the page for comparison, and other abbreviations.
fr mo - free mulatto ?
fr blk - free black ?

My cousin is searching her husband's family, and the site you have listed will help her no end. Neither of us have had to look at the West Indies before, so we are learning as we go long.
 
Thank you AM, it is a term we had not come across before.

I am old enough to remember being taught that shape as a capital Q:D, but never gave it a thought when trying to read the baptism:oops:.
 
If you go back here try and find some content by Joanne, Wendy’s daughter. She had an interesting thread we helped her with on Jamaican and surrounds genealogy. I had lots of fun looking around there. There is lots online without having to resort to a paid sub. It is a very interesting place to study and all well documented. Including slave returns.

I found that thread but it won’t help you as @Joanne was only after the info on one person named Mary.
 
My Lass is pretty well wrapped up in work things at the mo', & doesn't get much time on the computer at all. That 'virus' is active there again. :(
She spoke on phone last night & was tired out plus family dog's "antics" through the day to clean up.

I so feel for staff in 'care facilities' or hospitals or anywhere that a carer is needed/ employed when that virus catches up again. Usually 'lockdown' follows may be lessened now as people get so 'we'll be right mate' with it.

Hi Molly May.......I just came on here, but due to serious medical problems with Ron, I have not been around much. I had 2 cataract surgeries as well and finally able to focus on things. I will honestly have to refresh my memory on Jamaican genealogy, but a couple of questions. Do you know what church the baptism was done in? At that time period, the RC ones were private.

And the colour 'names' are interesting.....yes, Qa could be quadroon, but it sure looks like "2nd".....not sure on MO, but probably Mulatto.....depends on the clerk I guess. And Fr. Blk is 'free black'. Ron's gg-grandmother was a freed slave who was quadroon on one church baptismal register and brown on another. All was in the "eye of the beholder" as they say. I did find her own baptism in the late 1700's as I recall. Child of a wealthy planter.

2 things.....Burke is a well-known name in Jamaica......have one in Ron's Figueroa family by marriage back in the 1850's. And do pull up Pat Jackson's website called "Jamaican Family Search dot com"....btw, she also has Burke's in her ancestry. Patsy donated it to the London University and while it is not factually updated by them, there were several of us who transcribed for it and it's fascinating. The search engine is not the best, but there is a lot of interesting info on everything from early settlers, nationalities, slavery and so on. It shows you what a melting pot it was from long ago.

I will get my head back into this area of Jamaican history......been off on a different tangent at times. Hope this helps and I now realize I have been living in an alternate universe this year, lol.

It sounds like you have had a tough time recently, and hope all things are on the up for you and Ron ():-).

It is the Cater girls that my friend is researching. The Cater family had plantations in Jamaica, back in the 1700's and beyond. They also have, hardly surprisingly, Portuguese connections as well.

I will check if she has a church for the baptism tomorrow, and let you know,
and will pass on the website for her to peruse as well - thanks.
 
Thanks MM and Wendy.......it has been a long, frustrating haul. He collapsed in March and has been in hospital and a home since then. I am still trying to get my life sorted out. Doing "guy things" like snow tires on cars is a pain in the posterior. Talk to you later cuz I am off to get the said tires switched. ():-)
