Basil Williams

Basil Williams is my great x3 grandfather, and can confirm he was an Anglican (church of wales/england) minister, i.e. vicar. In America they call it episcopalian sort of. Does anyone have info about him? His son Conway came to Australia in the 1900s or 1910s, but no one in my family remembers when, and he isn't showing up on the normal immigration info. I know that he married in April 1915 in Australia (Inverell). Is there anything on the welsh side that could tell me?

So far I have two contenders for your Conway’s arrival in Australia. The first is Mr C Williams born 1886 arriving via Melbourne to Sydney from London 23/2/1910. He is a clerk. No other info. No ship name.
The second is Mr C Williams estimated birth year 1885, age 25, a clerk travelling from London to Sydney via Melbourne, travelling steerage arriving Sydney 27/2/1910 on the Narrung. Will keep looking.

There is the death registration of Basil H M Williams age 83 in 1929 at Newton M Glamorgan/Monmouthshire. This could be him as Conway was born in Glamorganshire.

Conways death registration has his father as Basil and mother as Caroline. In 1876 in Clifton Gloucestershire is the marriage of Basil Williams and Caroline Matilda Stephenson. The only Basil Williams with a marriage to a Caroline. I’m having lots of trouble finding Basil and Conway on any census’.

Caroline's dad was Robert Stephenson of Hampstead, which is in London, if that helps. It is confusing though, because that's all I know of him, and the only Robert Stephenson of Hampstead is a famous engineer who didn't have any kids, though everything else fits. This is Basil and Caroline's marriage cert.

The genealogy I have for Conway so far is:
Conway 1885-1968
Father Rev Basil Hall Morgan Williams 1848-1929 of Risca
Mother Caroline Matilda Stephenson 1846-1903, married 1876
Basil's father Rev Chancellor Hugh Williams 1795-1877 of Bassaleg married in 1825 to:
Basil's mother Mary Thomas about 1801- after 1877
Caroline's Father Robert Stephenson, from Hampstead, died before 1876
Hugh's father George Williams, from Williamston, Pembrokeshire, about 1771 to 1851
Hugh's mother Mary Williams (yes that's her maiden name), about 1765 to 1854
Mary Thomas' father Rev William J Thomas of St Fagans and Caerau, about 1764 to 1837
Mary Thomas' mother Mary, about 1774 to 1836
Mary Williams' father George Williams
Mary Williams' mother Elizabeth Hall 1730 to 1807
Elizabeth Hall's father Richard Hall 1697 - 1779 married in 1728 to:
Elizabeth Hall's mother Margaret Palmer 1708-sometime.

Not confusing at all (:

@Daft Bat Thanks for moving.
I have been searching for Caroline in Census’. Not yet found her with a Robert Stephenson but in 1871 there is Caroline M Stephenson as a stepdaughter age 25 living with, Elizabeth Brabier, Caroline Brabier, George Rumsey and Arthur Rumsey. There are no refs for this entry, all it has is Event, England year 1871 entry 3. I have no idea what all that means. I’m starting to think that Caroline may have made up Robert Stephenson, apparently a gentleman and engineer. This sounds a but suss. I have found who appears to be her in 1851 age 4 and in 1851 as a scholar boarder. I have no way to check the other pages to see who she may be living with in 1851. Maybe as she was marrying up she decided to elaborate.

Robert Stephenson son of George Stephenson, both steam engineers comes to mind. He was gone by 1859, you never know. He died in London as well.
Maybe she was his illegitimate daughter…..

I have found who appears to be her in 1851 age 4 and in 1851 as a scholar boarder.
There is an 1851 census entry for Caroline Stephenson, in Fulham.
She is enumerated as Scholar but no sign of 'boarder' on the original.
This Caroline is with her parents (James and Louisa) and siblings, living in Sand End Terrace, Fulham

Sorry. Must have been the 1861. I’ve been chasing her for hours.

The GRO (General Register Office) only has one birth registered for Caroline Matilda Stephenson in 1846 +/- 1 year
