Simeon Thompson (b. 1807 in Amersham, Bucks) and his parents James and Elizabeth

Simeon was baptised on 11 Jan 1807 in Amersham, Buckinghamshire. I've got some information on him - he was a white-smith (iron polisher) who stayed in Amersham all his life, but James and Elizabeth are really puzzling me. Assuming they were alive in the 1840s/50s, even if it was their winter years, there are no suggestions for a census with them on it. I've made educated guesses, but with Thompson being such a common name, I haven't managed to narrow down possibilities yet. One Public Member Tree gives birth and deathyears for James and Elizabeth, but annoyingly no sources. And Simeon married before 1838, so I can't even check if James was alive through a marriage certificate. Can my Thompsons be found?

Why assume they were both still alive in 1841? There is a burial in Amersham on 22 Jun 1835 of James Thompson aged 52, so born c1783, which might possibly be him.

There is a record in the Baptist registers for a Henry Thompson, born 18 Nov 1812, son of James & Elizabeth Thompson of Amersham. This child may possibly be the same person as Joseph Henry Thompson aged 17 (born c1812) who was baptised in Amersham on 15 Jul 1829, the son of James Thompson (blacksmith) & Elizabeth his wife.

If so then the Benjamin Thompson baptised 28 Jul 1830 at Amersham to James (a blacksmith) and Elizabeth Thompson may have been another child to this couple, which leads to:

1841 High Street, Amersham
Elizabeth Thompson 50 Grocer
Benjamin Thompson 10

1851 High St, Amersham
Elizabeth Thompson 63 Blacksmith employing 3 men
Benjamin Thompson 20 son Gardener
**** the next family on the census is Simeon, along with his wife Catherine and daughter Emma****

1861 High Street, Amersham
Sarah Aldridge 65 widow
Henry Thompson 48 (born c1813) widower Blacksmith b Amersham
Benjamin Thompson 30 Blacksmith born Amersham

Henry is presumably Benjamin's older brother, as noted above.

Assuming Elizabeth died between 1851 & 1861 then either of these could be her, although the first one seems the more likely:

THOMPSON, ELIZABETH 65 GRO Reference: 1852 M Quarter in AMERSHAM Volume 03A Page 206
THOMPSON, ELIZABETH 65 GRO Reference: 1854 S Quarter in AMERSHAM Volume 03A Page 275

The image isnt online but buried at Amersham 8 Mar 1852, Elisabeth Thompson aged 65 of Amersham Town

ADDED: When Benjamin Thompson married Betsy Haynes in 1861, Amersham, one of the witnesses was Simeon Thompson, so I strongly suspect they were brothers.

I think it more likely that the death of Elizabeth Thompson was more likely this one:-

Bucks Herald - Uxbridge Advertiser -Windsor and Eton Journal, Saturday, October 4th, 1856.

THOMPSON.- On the 27th ult., at Amersham, the wife of Henry Thompson, Blacksmith.

So she would have died on 27th September 1856., although I can't find a death registration for her.

On all the censuses Catherine says she was born Paddington.

On the 1851 and 61 censuses Simeon and Catherine are with Catherine's unmarried sister Sarah Padwick.

Marriage date 28 Feb 1830, Paddington, London
Simeon Thompson
Catherine Padwick

There is an image of either the Banns or Marriage on Ancestry, maybe this could give a clue?

Death of JANE Thompson Sep 1856 Amersham. Maybe a different Henry, blacksmith.

Further to what Andromeda has found for you regarding the information on Elizabeth possible wife of James THOMPSON, there is an article in the Bucks Chronicle & Gazette dated 20 March 1852 referring to the sale of all household goods & fittings of a smithy plus implements and tools etc of Mrs THOMPSON deceased at her late residence opposite the Elephant & Castle, High Street, Amersham. This would tie in with the death registration in the March qtr 1852 at Amersham of Elizabeth THOMPSON aged 65.

@Chimp I'm confused!

But we're looking for the death of Elizabeth Thompson the wife/widow of JAMES, not Henry? Henry is her son.

The newspaper article that Janet has posted above would seem to confirm that the 1852 death I suggested as most likely is the correct one.
