If you suffer from any throat infections, have animals to look after or wool to comb, then today is the day for you! Yes, today is the feast day of St Blaise, the patron saint of all of these.
Born in Sebastea, Armenia, Blaise became Bishop and had spent his life performing miracles such as healing the sick. However, the Roman Emperor Licinius was not too keen on Christians, preferring the Roman gods, and so ordered that all Christians should be killed. Blaise was one of them.
However, as he was being led away to the prison, he met a mother whose son was choking on a fish bone. The lad was instantly cured. Regardless of this, the governor was not able to to get Blaise to renounce his faith so beat him with a stick, ripped his flesh with iron combs and, when that didn’t work, cut his head off.
If you have a sheep with a sore throat, whose fleece you are about to comb, then I reckon that you’re covered.
