Family Search

I know all these websites have their positives and negatives. I guess for a lot of us we have to ignore the negatives. I was wondering how people use Family Search and what for?

I am just curious as I don't really find it user friendly (that's not surprising for me). It was suggested that I have a tree on Family Search, especially as I was struggling with some elusive Irish ancestors and I have had some success. However I do find there is also a lot of wrong information put in your tree, that you can't correct! Do I just grin and bear it?
What positive tips or suggestions do people have for using the site and getting the best from it?

With thanks Elizabeth

I use Family Search and find it has been sometimes useful. I also use Others e.g. FMP etc, etc. I refer to other Sites to cross check F.S. Info..
The trees on F.S. are not secure, as it seems anyone can access and put rubbish on them.

I found quite a lot of my relatives in trees on FamilySearch, with othe people added in who shouldn't be there. Letting anyone amend them is a recipe for disastrous mix-ups. I haven't put a tree on there - I wouldn't be happy at it being messed up.

Family search full text search is amazing. Just by putting in a name and a village or town, I have found all sorts of things that are not indexed anywhere like court papers and militia rolls. In the counties where records are sparse on line, I found things not available without travelling to the records office including baptisms and burials. The trees are very inaccurate for my family though, so I don't bother with them

You can also try uploadin your DNA results to "Gedmatch". basic is free & still has lots of helpful matching etc. You can also get additional for a slight fee. Try looking at the website first to get an idea. I'm a bit rubbish at the moment with concentration due to a bit of a [lot of a] condition which I can't get rid of- it's been sent to haunt me :(

When I was able to access Family Search, if there was a wrong entry I found that there was a box that I could leave a messge with the correct information.
I haven't any trees online.
This week I needed a password having forgotten the one that I had and the email came so I could have a new one.
I chose a password and I haven't been able to access because it says that I must not have my user name and this happened several times.
In the end I gave up.

All sites have some family trees that are complete fabrications. That said others can't change your tree, But on FS others can & do change your tree & often add or take away ancestors, If not careful you can end with a complete fairy tale. You can find useful information on FS -but you do have to be wary.
