Roger Charles Tichborne, heir to an ancient Hampshire baronetcy, set sail from Valparaiso in Chile today 20th April in 1854 bound for Jamaica. However, the ship went down off the coast of South America and everyone perished. However, his mother never gave up hope.
Eleven years later, “R.C.Tichborne” turned up claiming to be the missing man and demanding the title and estate. Lady Tichborne was delighted but the rest of the family didn’t believe him and a court case ensued. The chap turned out to be a butcher from Wapping by the name of Arthur Orton and was sentenced to 14 years penal servitude.
But there was a strange sequel to this story. Orton was extremely fat and years later, a tiny music-hall comedian who had been very fat as a child was nicknamed “Little Tichborne” – or “Little Tich” for short. Since then, many little people have had to put up with being called “Titch”.
