Richard Sperry, born 1606 in Thurleigh Parish, Bedfordshire, emigrated to the colonies and settled in the New Haven colony sometime around 1640. He married Dennis (last name unknown) who was born in England about 1627. Richard died in New Haven in 1698, and Dennis died in 1706 or 1707. Richard's parents were John Sperry and Mary (last name unknown). John's parents were John Sperry and Agnes Rawlings.

Richard was said to have gone to the colonies as agent for the Earl of Warwick; can anyone tell me what that means? In the New Haven colony, he was a farmer who worked on the land owned by Stephen Goodyear; after Goodyear's death, Richard was given the land. Was Goodyear the Earl of Warwick?

I would like to hear from anyone who can tell me about the Sperry family in Bedfordshire. Were they farmers? Did Richard have siblings and did any of them emigrate to the colonies? I've looked at some of the parish records, and the family seems to have disappeared at some point. Does anyone know what became of them? I'd love to connect with any descendants still in England.

Probably just his representative, reporting back to the Earl any happenings in the New Haven Colony.

No, a chap called Robert Rich was made Earl of Warwick in 1618. This family held the title until 1759, when the line became extinct. Stephen Goodyear was probably another representative of the Earl and, if you can find out fuerther information about him, might prove to be an interesting line to follow up.

FamilySearch has:

John Spery, Christened 27 Oct 1598, Thurleigh, Bedford. Parents: John & Mary.

Also a Marriage:

Jn Sperry & Jane Day, 12 June 1603, Thurleigh, Bedford.
